James Owens Wexfoed appointed ref for final.Very strange to see one of the semi final refs getting it.I thought James Mcgrath was a certainty after Limerick Kilkenny match but obviously others thought different.

They don't tend to give football refs the semi final and final (although withnreplays, it's happened recently) but I think it's a lot more common in hurling.

In any case, it's a hugely proud occasion for James and here's hoping it goes well for him.

Hard to know who is the best hurling referee. Somethink Owens is good others think he is bad. Matter of opinion. One point I will make about hurling refereeing in general, there is a massive difference between the way hurling is refereed at intercounty level and at club level. Being from Wexford I have seen James Owens refereeing many club games and he usually does a decent job. But he awards frees in club matches that he wouldn't even consider awarding at intercounty level. Its the same rule book so the approach should be the same.

I'm confident he will do a good job

Look lads, the referee is going to do the best job he can. Every match discussion on here is ruined by referee blaming, etc.
I heard DJ Carey say once "I made far more mistakes in that match than the referee". Can people not just accept that a referee is human?

Wexford's an amazing county. The people are the best in the world. I won't hear a bad word said about any of them, even John Denton. By the way err an aul ticket going spare down in the sunny south east?

Disappointing for James and disappointing to see him quit inter county. His handling of the Limerick v Kilkenny game was refreshing to watch. Only 12 frees were giving between both teams. He can feel aggrieved to have not got any further games or were the GAA planning for another replay? His two All Ireland finals were replays.

Even the referee's are getting upset, what is up with McGrath? 2018 sure has been a great year for moaning.

Aggrieved to only have reffed 2 finals!!!! Or the CP didn't follow Brian Gavins advice in the Examiner!!!!!

Baby and bath water springs to mind.

Unusual that McGrath wasn't involved at all in any capacity for any of the 3 semi finals or the final. That's 16 positions and am I right in saying that McGrath wasn't selected for any of them? I don't think he's a great referee but its pretty unusual turn of events really. Is there something we don't know about?

I meant he can feel aggrieved to have not got any further games in this year's championship after his performance in the quarter final.

Maybe there are other refs?

He's had 2 All Ireland's already.

Seems a bit toys out of pram stuff.

Or maybe because he's not from a 'traditional' hurling county?

Don't start that nonsense. He's already refereed two, and Barry Kelly has refereed 4

James Owens is a better referee than James McGrath and hence why he got the final.

The bigger problem is the lack of good referees.

McGrath has made some fool of himself over this

He done that since last years final by the looks of his Facebook pics. Very unprofessional to post pics with the likes of canning celebrating the all Ireland and with Lee chin among others. Certainly not what I'd expect anyway from a referee.
