Game is becomig a farce with this keep ball perhaps it should be a one minute shot clock! ( see Basketball shot clock introduced to deal with exactly same issue) cjx (Tyrone) - Posts: 270 - 21/07/2018 22:17:49 2124434 Link 0 |
You need to tackle to get the ball back. There is no tackling in basketball, that's why there is a shot clock, to force a turnover. Should we do away with tackling also? If you sit with 15 men inside you're own 45 watching the opposition pass around in midfield then you don't deserve posessiin. You shoukd earn posessiin in a contact sport, not be gifted it via a shot clock to reward lack of endeavour.

If you look at it tacking in basketball is very like gaelic football reaching in and across often when seeking possession and deflecting passes with no shouldering but lots of contact Did you ever play basketball? Reading the arguments in their history its just like football now. Hand passing might as well be throwing with our refs so it is making keeping possession very easy and tackling is so ill defined frees are cheap easily got in the tackle. Shot clock would open up the game It is just boring right now in so many phases cjx (Tyrone) - Posts: 270 - 21/07/2018 23:18:29 2124461 Link 0 |
I think you'll find that apart from the shoulder to shoulder contact, tackling is the exact same in basketball. You are allowed to slap the ball out of an opponents hands. Anything other than that is just how GAA has evolved to ignore the actual rulebook.

You haven't thought this through: with a shot clock, all a defending team would have to do is cram everyone behind the 45 and wait for it to expire. Gavvygavgav (Dublin) - Posts: 382 - 22/07/2018 01:56:16 2124523 Link 2 |
No it's not the same, I've played basketball. If you 'reach in' in basketball you give away a foul called a 'reaching in foul'. You can't wrestle a ball from the other player with one hand as you can in Gaelic, in fact you can only grab it cleanly with two hands for a 'jump ball' usually or whip away when being dribbled. Completely different. You want the ball in football, come and take it off me instead of sitting in your box, which is where the real problem lies. Invent a rule to keep players up the field, offside opposite rule. That would keep the space open.

I like it to be honest, its a reverse attacking blanket, genius really fair play Mr Gavin. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4445 - 22/07/2018 10:52:20 2124589 Link 1 |
The shotclock was introduced in basketball to speed up the game. 5 v 5 in a minimal contact sport on a smaller pitch in shorter games with timeouts, clock stopped for fouls, free throws etc. You're not comparing like-with-like. Joxer is right, why do this to incentivise a team that won't tackle? GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7345 - 22/07/2018 11:19:21 2124603 Link 1 |
My suggestion is that handpasses be limited to two in your own half. Once you go over this you can only kick pass in your own half. The rationale is that this will make it easier for the opposition to get the ball back from teams playing it around in their own half, but they will still have to make an effort to get it. shaneShankill (Dublin) - Posts: 42 - 25/07/2018 13:40:05 2126092 Link 1 |
How about refs just let people tackle? First thing that the defending/losing team need to conquer is fitness and conditioning, we were out on our feet against the Dubs so it was really hard to even get close to them in those last few minutes. However when we did, Anthony Thompson put in a good tackle (imo) and it would've resulted in a turnover and maybe a goal chance with where it was on the pitch. Ref blew up for a free. I see a lot of soft enough frees now and it doesn't seem like defenders are allowed to tackle really. JoeSoap (Donegal) - Posts: 1432 - 25/07/2018 14:31:52 2126115 Link 0 |
All that will happen with a shot clock is every player will get behind the ball even more than they already do and wait for time to run out, knowing they will be handed back possession without even having to tackle. I would be more in favour of at least 3 players from each team having to be in the other half at all times. It might stop the bunch defending and open up more space to attack through. Something has to change because some of what goes on is dire to watch. kildare73 (Kildare) - Posts: 854 - 25/07/2018 14:53:56 2126129 Link 1 |
Another one of the suggestions, along with limiting handpasses/must kick after a hand pass/can't play the ball back behind your half way line etc, that are designed to benefit teams playing with a blanket defence. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13707 - 25/07/2018 16:36:12 2126170 Link 1 |
