TJ Reid Or Joe Canning?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Watching the match Sunday I realized Big Joe was absent for large parts of the game. Started thinking TJ always has some influence on a match. Looking back over their careers I would have to say that if I had to pick one over the other I would take TJ. TJ is the best free taker in Ireland he is always dangerous for a goal. He brings other players along and is rarely absent for any extended period of time during a match. Will go down as one of the best Kilkenny ever had.

I'm sure canning will hold down as one of the Galway greats also but he is probably not as deadly as Reid from frees.
I think Tj is probably more mobile and involved in general play a bit more too.
Two really skilfull hurlers though.

TJ Reid beyond doubt. Canning has such a high profile meaning anything good he does is exaggerated. Won hurler of the year on the basis of playing well for ten mins in all Ireland semi final. I know who I'd prefer on my side when the going gets tough

Of course you would but then you're from Kilkenny. Your very first post I see. Good to see you've dived head long into things and aren't shy

Canning has scored quite a bit more both from play and overall, than TJ through their careers, bearing in mind that TJ's a year older. Joe's been a superstar since was a teenager, mainly because of Galway's reliance on him from such a young age, but also his underage and club performances. TJ's been excellent for a long time but it's really in the last number of years, that he's been acknowledged at the level he's at.
Now that has a lot to do with the fact that he was just one part of forward line with multiple greats. Canning was carrying Galway as soon as he came on the scene.
The ironic thing now is that KK are probably far more reliant on TJ now than Galway are on Joe, so roles have reversed to a degree.
If I was to pick one of them over the course of the last 10 years, I'd go for Joe but I'm sure plenty would pick TJ.

Agree, both class hurlers of their generation and a joy to watch them.

Agreed Mooncat. Who cares which, if either is better; both great athletes and by all accounts very decent men.

Silly read - sorry lad. Like what are we comparing them on? Hurling? General Play? Frees? Being sound lads? Silly comparing players or the other one that gets me - teams from different generations, yeah any intercounty team now would beat most of the 60's and 70's teams.

Anyway on a side note. Image how difficult it must be to play as either JC or TJ, at intercounty there's a good chance your double marked, or a sweeper marking the space in front of you, add that to the pressure of being a leader within your team. The in club matches your certainly double marked and you have lads trying to make a name for themselves marking you and wearing timber across you!

Canning is a genius and Reid isn't. Reid is a great hurler and had a brilliant career but Canning has that something extra.

Both superb hurlers, if I had to pick one it would be TJ.

Canning was the better player in his early 20s but has slowed down a bit. TJ has been better the last 3 years or so. Who was better at their best, Canning (2010 or so), or TJ (now)? Probably Canning

Canning without a shadow of a doubt.

Not even a comparison in my book.

Take away tjs constant whining and getting easy frees from gullible refs and in most games he gives ye not much more.

That might have something to do with the team he played on.

He has 6 more actually, but that's a nonsense argument. If Canning was born in KK, he'd have just as many.
There are thousands of players with more All Ireland medals than Ken McGrath, yet he's a better hurler than the vast majority of them.

If I was managing a team and had a choice of either for the biggest possible game - I'd pick TJ
