Laois V Monaghan

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Anyone think there could be an upset here?

Are Laois as good as Fermanagh ?Probably
Do Monaghan tend to loose games they should win when they are expected ?Yes
Have Laois got forward to trouble Monaghan?Yes
Do Laois like playing in Navan ?Yes
Laois's record against teams from the north in back door games is very good!!

I think the bookies might be a bit generous with 7 points here!!!

Of course there could be an upset here. Monaghan can be very flakey when we are the favourites as was shown v Fermanagh. We also have been very lucky with the draw so far playing two division 4 teams and winning comfortably. There is no doubt that Laois are much better than both Waterford and Leitrim. Laois were div 4 but they probably should never really have been there. They should be operating on a higher level than that and they are an improving team

All that aside Monaghan being a division one outfit for the last number of years should win it. We don't rely on McManus for 50% plus of the scores like we use to. We will need other players like McCarthy, to chip in with the scores again on Sunday. He has been impressive in the last 2 games when McManus has been tightly marked (albeit against poorer opponents). Should be a hot afternoon and hopefully no shock!!

If Laois manage to win this it will be a huge upset.
They have nothing to loose and Monaghan expected to win.
Kildare dumping Mayo out was unexpected to say the least but equally this will be huge if Laois could pull it off.

I can't see anything but a Monaghan win here, but I don't see a big win, 3 or 4 points possibly in a high scoring game, for entertainment this could be the most enjoyable game of the round

1. No

2. Doesn't matter, Different game.

3. Yea. But they win a lot they are expected to win too.

4. Yea. But Monaghan have played far better forward lines, And Laois have to do some defending themselves against some great players.

I don't think the bookies are wrong.

D1 v D4

It will show in the end

Monaghan to win pulling up .

Sorry to disappoint my Laois neighbours, but I think Monaghan will just have too much, and win by 5-6 points.

First half will be massive. If Monaghan can get 4-5 point lead in the first half they should have enough when the heat takes a toll in the second half. Monaghan can't take it for granted though.

No I have a lot of time for Monaghan men one of them drinks in my local down here in Laois and is a great football man but he is worried about the tie...Not so much about Laois but about the Farney not showing up when they are expected to win!

Ah sure that's just that natural Monaghan pessimism that's been beaten into us after years and years of disappointment.

We should be grand this weekend though.

Laois are like that as well but for some reason seem to fancy their chances here maybe its because all the pressure is on the farney!

I think the Monaghan team are just taking each game as its comes, they are not looking beyond the next game, lessons have been learnt, hopefully we will prevail on Sunday and our onward march continues.

Sounds a little bit like you looking past the Laois match (!) Speaking to a few Monaghan lads this week and they are starting to slip into the same way of thinking. In all fairness you should win with a bit to spare. But you just never know with Monaghan so it will be an interesting contest. Worth a trip to Navan at least.

I look upon this match as a second chance at doing something this summer. The Monaghan players will know how badly they messed up losing to fermanagh and are still hurting on that front. I expect a big performance in front of a large Monaghan crowd and nothing taking for granted. Provincials are over now this is the start of the real championship. Looking forward to it.

A little like Mayo, if Monaghan don't put this fixture to bed, they could well suffer big time down the road.

Laois are a very well coached team with some decent talent throughout the side. While I think Monaghan should prevail the plus 7 points is very hard to resist. I can definitely see Laois keeping it within the 7.

Monaghan will win this one handy. I fancy them to do well in the super 8 competition. I would like to say no disrespect to laois, but I don't know how not to when you make a call on monaghan to win handy. I just cant see monaghan messing up again this year unless they are totally outclassed later in the competition.

I think so too.

The only side I have seen that would be capable of totally outclassing us would totally outclass all the other 11 teams still in the competition.

We have to give Laois the total respect their deserve. Anything less and we'll be regretting for years to come this brilliant chance to take part in the inaugural Super 8's where I suggest we'll be more than capable of making a huge impression.
This match against Laois could be the most important in Monaghan's history...
Win it and the possibilities are endless...Lose it and Monaghan football will be finished for ten years!
