FIFA has an interesting tie break there, I wonder would it work in the GAA if a match is tied after extra time. It would clean up the Dubs, Mayo, Ros etc, counties that live on the edge with cards. Just a suggestion. maroondiesel (Mayo) - Posts: 1196 - 02/07/2018 21:53:55 2117920 Link 0 |
i would hate to see a big match decided on yellow/red cards. perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 3929 - 03/07/2018 10:20:54 2118018 Link 0 |
Ridiculous rule in a professional sport. Even more so if it was brought into a sport where players willingly put their lives on hold all year, train 4 or 5 times a week while having work commitments, all to chase a dream of playing in big games for their county, representing the club. To then go out, draw a game in sweltering heat like what weve had the past two weeks, after extra time, to lose out because a fella may have unintentionally committed a bad, high tackle in the last minute of injury time in the middle of the field because he was out on his feet, drained physically and that could see him and his team knocked out is absolutely beyond preposterous waynoI (Dublin) - Posts: 13650 - 03/07/2018 11:51:38 2118053 Link 2 |
Pardon my ignorance but what is the new Tie Break FIFA have introduced after Extra Time? I know they have added cards for deciding from the Group stages if points, Goal Difference, Goals For/Against etc are all the same that the Fair Play element comes in to it but I thought that after Extra Time it was still Penalties - as per a couple of the second round games played this week. Or is this something they are proposing going forward? What have I missed? Offside_Rule (Antrim) - Posts: 4058 - 03/07/2018 13:08:54 2118077 Link 0 |
I agree - after Pts, H2H, GD and GF - corner count would be a more consistent standard relative to the varying egos and rule application of referees. Could be 45x/65s in GAA as a 'last resort' after 100 mins of match play. omahant (USA) - Posts: 2592 - 03/07/2018 22:33:06 2118239 Link 0 |
i would be happy with the idea of goals scored only if a game is level after extra time. would really encourage teams to go for goals more. only thing is teams could crowd out their own goal if they're a few points up and ahead in goals scored NaomhNaille (Donegal) - Posts: 124 - 03/07/2018 23:03:06 2118253 Link 0 |
Nothing. It's still that way, penalties after extra time. I'm not aware of any plans to bring fair play in in place of penalties.

Ah grand - I must have misunderstood the opening post.

A golden point would be a good way of doing it. Donegalman (None) - Posts: 3830 - 04/07/2018 12:50:13 2118428 Link 0 |
FIFA introduced it to avoid situations like 1990 when ourselves and the Dutch tied on points, goal difference & goals scored in our group. To determine the group ordering, which had an impact on who and where we'd play next once the KO stage began, they drew lots. Hardly ideal. Applying a fair play rule gave a better incentive to teams to ...well play fair!
