Kildare V Mayo

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

An incredible end to an incredible week for Kildare. So, so proud of the team and the supporters. Fully vindicated the stance we took last Monday - it galvanized the team and the county and the defeat against Carlow is but a distant memory.
Though Croke Park will never admit it, right was on our side and I hope other counties will be emboldened to stand up to them in the future. It's not all about the money.

Replying To Green_Gold:  "An absolutely brilliant game, easily the best game of the championship so far. The effort of both teams was incredible, the players a credit to their counties. Diarmaid O'Connor playing on with cramp summed it up. Its a pity there had to be a loser.

Kildare were terrific especially Paul Cribbin and Kevin Feely. If Kildare can keep this going they could be a match for anyone. I fancy them to get to the Super 8s as I don't think any of the provincial losers are up to much except Roscommon.

I felt for Mayo, they actually played well but just weren't efficient enough in front of goals. I still feel Mayo will be one of the top sides in the next few years but could do with a few more younger lads to come through. Surely its time to give the likes of Conor Loftus and Evan Regan an extended run in the team. This Mayo team are the most entertaining team in the history of the GAA, they have been involved in some classic games."
Our u20s are in the all Ireland semi final v Derry in 2 weeks time...hoping they can rescue the sunmer for us

What an amazing win. Huge credit to both sides for playing such attacking football. 40 scores, an absolute classic!

The excitement in Kildare is related to the team grinding out a win against a top team. Mayo dominated from the 15th minute to the 50th and Paul Cribben kept us in it on his own in that time.

Unfortunately for Mayo, the hot day was always going to suit the younger squad and you could see the belief grow in Kildare once they were level with 20 minutes left despite being cleaned out in midfield. And the composure shown at the end was such a lovely surprise. What a turnaround since the Carlow game.

Heat played no part...Kildare were just better on the day. Best of luck for the rest of the championship...hope ye make the super 8s and get another game in Newbridge

We won because we were the team who finished stronger. I think a lot of that could be learned from bitter experience of losing three very tight games in the league which ultimately cost us. If that's the case then it was definitely worth it. Really impressed how we stuck it out right to the end. I seriously doubt we'll get a Super 8s game in Newbridge, from my understanding of the week gone by, beyond round 3 the CCCC have the power to move games and I'm damn sure they will exercise that power should we make it that far! Nights like last night and the scenes at the final whistle are what the GAA should be all about, every county should have a night like that now and again. Sadly I think the Association is moving away from that kind of thing more and more. We can celebrate today but from the draw in the morning onwards the feet have to get back on the ground and I'm sure O'Neill will make sure they will. Possibly some of the opposing counties in the morning might secretly like to get us if they think we'll be dining out all this week on everything that has happened. I don't think that will be the case though. Heard both Eoin Doyle and Dan Flynn talk about getting the heads down again next week and trying for the Super 8s. It was great to hear in all the mayhem and celebrations around them. It was a great night at the end of a great week, now we go again.

Well played Kildare. Deserved to win after sticking up for integrity and you could see the players had a cause as a result. A great game.

Final word on this. Gave my honest opinion on this whole saga. I wanted Kildare to have their home game, I wanted Kildare to win. I wish Kildare well in future rounds.
However the sticking the boot into mayo is a bit much , they have been the best mayo team I have ever seen. I mean 2 own goals cost them a certain all ire. Now they say you make your own luck in this world and changing keeper etc certainly won't help, they also came up against arguably the best team we have ever seen , and should have beaten them on at least two occasions, now I suspect Rochford will not be around next year. But remember it was Vaughan who cost mayo all ire in September not the management. So less of the grandstanding against a team who kept coming back, but for whatever reason never got what they deserved.
Again best wishes to Kildare, and hard luck to mayo.

I would second everything you say about Mayo. A fine team who through a combination of luck and circumstance didn't get over the line. A fantastic bunch of supporters too. Nobody would have ever begrudged them the big prize. And thanks for your very vocal support this week. Us lads don't always see eye to eye on everything(or anything lol) but the likes of yourself, Richie and others were front and centre this week. Resume hostilities in February??;) Hope the wife and kids are well.

Yes you'd have to feel for the Mayo support, must be tough now to realise that they will never win an All Ireland with this current aging team and things don't look good for the foreseeable future either with Galway dominating Connaught and no real talent coming through in Mayo, indeed Mayo have done well when you consider the quality of forwards they have had to work with, I have lost count of how many finals they have lost, must be some kind of record in any sport, but still the fans kept supporting the team, amazing stuff.

Saw some cars with Kildare flags flying in Dublin today. I am very happy for them. While I would have loved a Mayo win last Saturday it is uplifting to see other counties getting their day in the sun. Now make an impact in the Super 8's.

To be fair, I'd begrudge them an All Ireland so I wouldn't say nobody...maybe the majority? But then the majority of people live in Dublin - would they swap one of their wins for the people of Mayo? OK so not, me and probably not the majority of people either.

Some. Some people would not begrudge mayo an All Ireland.

Deliberate or not, but you reminded me of the "What have the Romans ever done for us" scene in The Life of Brian.

Well done Doc.

Well sure each to their own. Personally I think their resilience has to be admired over the last few years. Actually the majority of the people don't live in Dublin, about 20% of the population do. So are per your technicality.........I'm going to go with the majority ,the majority, of people wouldn't have begrudged Mayo an All Ireland.

Any Mayo team featuring Ciaran Mc Donald is better than any form of the Mayo team over the last 10 years.

Their resilience? Seriously? Well then...

I admire Carlow for their brave choice of jersey colour scheme. The bravest county I've ever seen.

Well doc you are either having a good troll or not the best judge of talent. If we had Ciaran mac and even a Connor Mortimer type player in the squad now we would have got over the line. When we had these lads in our team and got to all Ireland finals lost the battles in defence and midfield so we couldn't supply them with the service the needed. The team we have had the last 8 years is better than anything we have had since the 1950s with the team in the late 1990s the next best after.

Yes resilience, really! Are you saying they haven't shown resilience over the last few years? They have been the second only to Dublin in reaching finals and semi finals. And yes, the Carlow jersey is quite colourful.........especially when you are chasing it!
