Fermanagh V Monaghan

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Monaghan are rightly favorites, but this is a real toughy!... Quite a few people in Ulster GAA have actually tipped Fermanagh as "dark horses " to win Ulster.

Monaghan won Ulster in '13, against the odds, after getting promoted from Div.3... why not Fermanagh?

Gallagher & Ricey will have them bang-on defensively & could be a hard nut to crack. Monaghan will have to be at the "top of their game" to win this one

I think Fermanagh can do it.

I don't

Can't see us stoping McManus and if we do I've no doubt someone else will step up to fill the void. Monaghan are a serious outfit. If we give away frees Monaghan will punish us. Monaghan strongest side in Ulster by a considerable bit.

Monaghan are a very decent, seasoned team but are by no means world beaters. Go back to the semi final last year when hardly anyone gave Down a chance. I really do think Fermanagh have the players to trouble Monaghan. Limiting the free count and pushing up on Beggan's kick outs will be key.

For precisely that reason re Down last year I think Monaghan will win this one.

They will be all to aware of that performance last year. Fermanagh need to be respected as a very serious opposition.

Monaghan have the better squad, if the team ensure there is no complacency we will win this one with 2-3 points to spare.

True. Monaghan will be out looking to right the wrongs of last year's semi final defeat to Down. Although the players may feel they already put those wrongs right when they beat them in Croke Park a month later. I would have to agree that Monaghan have the better squad.

This will be a good, physical encounter on the pitch & a tactical battle between Gallagher & O'Rourke on the sideline.
Looking forward to it, even with the epic voyage to & from Omagh!! The Farney should prevail but still haunted by Athletic Grounds 2017, so taking nothing for granted ....

The trip to and especially out of Omagh is extremely annoying. So hopefully we will be leaving with the right result.

Rory Gallagher will adopt very defensive tactics and it will be interesting to she how Monaghan adapt to this. Can see it being tight for 50 odd mins and Monaghan's class will get them over the line. 0-14 to 0-8

Rory is doing a great job with Fermanagh and this looks a better fit for him after his time with Donegal. They could prove tricky opposition in the back door for anyone.

This is a very hard game. I think it could well go to extra time. I believe that the difference between the sides will be on monaghan's side, although there is a lot going for Fermanagh too with Gallagher out to prove something and Ryan Mcmenamin in their training team. We will probably see a very very hard hitting game. I think that Fermanagh are very lively outsiders here, but there is a sense of destiny with Monaghan this season. They have beaten 2 of their bogey teams or venues this year. They will be hard to stop in Ulster, but it is not impossible.

Fermanagh will make this very difficult for Monaghan, Rory will set them up very defensively and try to frustrate them. I can't see this game winning any beauty contests and the RTE pundits will have a field day, Brolly & co. must be really looking forward to this one so they can lecture everybody on how bad Ulster football is. I think it could be a lot closer than most people think but still think Monaghan will have too much for Fermanagh.

Pushing up on the kickout will simply prompt Beggan to hit long balls into space behind the midfield for Monaghan lads to run on to. He did this sublimley aginst Tyrone in the league - it was a masterclass.

Agree that the free count is important for Fermanagh but difficult to do when you see Monaghans running game and the danger presented by frees even beyond the 45. Tyrone seemed to be reluctant to engage as much as usual in the first round championship match, probably for this reason, but it still resulted in seevral successful conversions for both Beggan and McManus.

Monaghan to play Kieran Hughes in his best position this time........Full Forward......the long ball option over the top of blanket will be an additional threat which not really there against Tyrone........ of course will miss him around middle but K Hughes can cause chaos in there as in Donegal 2013.

Will be tough though against a resurgent Fermanagh...may the best team win !

How bad ulster football is? Tyrone v Monaghan was a fantastic game with great quality.

RTE have been guilty of lazy punditry for quite some time now.

This game will not go to extra time. Monaghan will win this one by at least 8 or 9. Fermanagh are miles behind us in there development. Everyone is reading a lot in the new Fermanagh management and how much better they have made them. They beat a really ordinary armagh team who played like a team that didn't want to be there.

Should be a tight game with little in it at the finish. Fermanagh are due a little bit of luck in games against Monaghan. Failure to keep a full complement of players on the pitch could be fatal for either team. Lets hope that there is no targeting of players by either side

If it was Tyrone playing Fermanagh it would be all about how could Fermanagh contain them to keep the score respectable. But it is Monaghan playing them. The only team to beat Tyrone in ulster in 3 seasons and the only team to beat Dublin since Kerry in the league final. So where does everyone get the idea that this will be a tight game. We are a different animal this year with a serious bench. Last year has been left well behind this team. Monaghan by 8 or 9.

Armagh scores 7 points against Fermanagh. I think predicting Monaghan will beat them by 9 points is a bit extreme. Fermanagh are very disciplined and strong defensively.

Yes the Tyrone v Monaghan game was fantastic, very enjoyable with both teams really going at it. I just have a feeling that Rory will make this a difficult game for Monaghan and have everybody behind the ball. I really hope not as the football in ulster this year has been very open. If this is an open and free flowing game then you would expect Monaghan to win comfortably but can't see Fermanagh being that accomodating.

I imagine that Fermanagh will bring bodies back and make it hard for Monaghan. Any score monaghan get on Sunday will be earned (so long as we don't lose concentration). Fermanaghs biggest problem will be moving the ball up the field when we turn it over. The fitness levels of the Fermanagh squad atm is something serious. Eoin Donnelly has a body fat % of 8%. 8%!!!! Brad Pitt was 6% in fight club so that gives you an indication of where he is.
