All I know is that when Sligo beat London there was a comment made in the RTE studio that "London will take a lot of encouragement from their display" for the backdoor (a comment that couldn't be more ridiculous!). So if London are in the backdoor the loser of this game should be in the back door.

A great win for Leitrim, never in doubt. (Leitrim) - Posts: 41 - 06/05/2018 22:06:13 2096963 Link 0 |
Sligo/Leitrim double! well done to both of our county neighbours. Hard luck to Neil Collins,John Collins and Donal Ward on the New York team. The_analyser (Roscommon) - Posts: 3759 - 06/05/2018 22:21:39 2096968 Link 0 |
Great heart showed by Leitrim, down 3 with 3 mins to go but unfortunately as usual on our hoganstand Leitrim page, still mostly negative comments by our "supporters" Leitrimabu17 (Leitrim) - Posts: 18 - 06/05/2018 22:24:42 2096970 Link 0 |
Fair play to Leitrim. Down by three with a few minutes left and kick four points to win it. Shows a lot of character. LaLu (Louth) - Posts: 233 - 06/05/2018 22:40:07 2096976 Link 0 |
Never in doubt? Bit of a joke statement considering you had to score in injury time of extra time to beat a team that don't play any competitive games in the lead up to them game!

Surely its hard blame them having negative comments

Lack of any competitive games is always going to be what holds New York back. While Leitrim may not be the best of places at the moment, they still played 6 NFL and finished 5th in Div 4 so they were always going to be better prepared why (Kildare) - Posts: 142 - 07/05/2018 09:41:04 2097011 Link 0 |
It shouldn't be scrapped because it's a Holiday to Ny for Irish people, ? They can still visit New York regardless. New York have never won a math, last night night was a great effort but another defeat. They won't have a player of Jamie Clarkes class to call on every year.

Yes and we went into that game having finished 3rd in Div 1 having beaten Donegal,Cork and Kerry all away from home. Leitrim plying their trade in div 4 showed great character to pull that win out last night when written off by so many and we certainly can't underestimate them now especially when we are so inconsistent and on our bad day capable of losing to anyone.

Told ye Sligo and Leitrim would win......but my god an awful shame NY didn't beat Leitrim...so close. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11236 - 07/05/2018 10:10:31 2097021 Link 1 |
What difference do it make you or Cavan if it's played or not?

There have been several close calls in NY and London in the past decade or so, to be fair, with London going on a famous run to the Connacht final in 2013. The point of these games is to show that the GAA actually gives a sh*t about the work being done internationally to promote gaelic games. There is little cost to the counties going over other than flights for fans, which as you say are a voluntary expense (in the case of counties from the West, a lot of people supporting the away side will be Irish immigrants to London or NY in any case). They also facilitate fundraising for a lot of county sides, though I seem to remember that some in NY weren't entirely happy with that, given the shallow resource pool for their own teams. There's more to the GAA than simply winning games, if that was the only criterion applied to championship participation, several smaller counties wouldn't get within an asses' roar of playing the big guns.
