Who Goes Down - Donegal Or Mayo?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

A very exciting finish and it keeps Mayo's great division 1 record alive. I'd have a soft spot for both teams, Donegal historically and this current Mayo group, so I'm sorry to see one of them go down.
However, we saw a situation at the end which is becoming all too common in tight games these days.
There was 30 seconds left on the clock when McLoughlin scored and Donegal tried to take a quick kickout. Lads were pulled and dragged forcing the ref to stop the game. As soon it resumed, he blew whistle on the kickout which seemed pretty unfair. It essentially rewarded the cynical play.
This isn't a dig at Mayo. They were the victims of it in last year's All Ireland and I'm sure my own team would do it if in the same position.
There's no rule in the book currently which is sufficient to deal with this. Many have suggested an automatic 14 yard free. I'd tend to agree at this stage.

The real work begins now. And God know's they have a lot of work to do. Mayo need more players, what they have won't cut it. Was actually thinking going down to D2 might have been the best thing for them. But roll on summer.

Not as embarrassing as the few hundred Galway supporters celebrating on the pitch in Castlebar.

Up Mayo

You secretly love us Belclare, us and our 'resilience'. 3 Connacht teams in Division 1 now. Roll on May 13th!

It would cut it out in a heart beat. Also goalies taking forever to kick the ball out is another problem. Waiting for someone to get free. Put a clock on them as well.

And why not, it shows they value staying in Division 1. They are not robots and coming from behind at the death to survive like that deserves a little celebration. Great result considering they were missing Harrison, Higgins, Barrett, Vaughan, Keegan and Cillian. There will be an extra pep in their step now for the Champioship!

If the rules were enforced properly all the pulling and dragging would have been black cards, players could not be replaced until the next break in play. Mayo would have to defend with ~ 12 Players and the referee should have adjusted the extra time accordingly. If you start to reward the cycnical fouls with a 13 metre free every player will be looking for a 'black card' type of foul in contact.

Its creeping into the club whereby star club players are occasionally targeted when they are tracking back with players stepping across them or running into them after making a pass. The reward far outweight the risk already in most of these instances the addition of the 13 metre free would make a holy show of it altogether.

A really fantastic score by McLoughlin and what a dramatic way to escape! Donegal literally kicked that game away today when they kicked that ball short and into the Mayo keepers hands. However, Donegal have been really unlucky in this league and not just today. Moreover, as good as McLoughlin's point was he must have taken more than 10 steps without playing the ball before the kick and got away with it. In end, Mayo applied some hard lessons learnt when they killed the clock at the end with total black arts and you can't blame them.

Donegal indulged in time wasting in the last 10 minutes ie from 60th to 70th minute. Mayo pulled and dragged in the last minute. Ref should have added 2 minutes for the melee. But well done Mayo, they just about deserved it.

Fantastic kick by kevin of his weaker right foot. Let's not forget Eoin O Donoughue just before that with a great kick to bring us within a point.

There was 20 seconds left before the scuffle so in your thinking the ref should have added on 5 times as much. Well i guess it's your opinion.
