Monaghan vs Mayo

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Thoroughly looking forward to this one. I think it will be a decent enough encounter.
Mayo will want there full team back to fitness, they have not been doing Great in the FBD but they have been experimenting a fair bit. Would be interested to see a Alan Freeman, Diarmad O'Connor and Andy Moran full forward line.
Monaghan is the same for Mayo but I think that they have a Stronger midfeild, McCarron hasn't been great and I think that McManus won't be starting as he won't be back till the Middle of the League (am I right?)
Think that Mayo will get the win here.
Mayo 2+

McManus will start this weekend. If he doesn't we are in big trouble. We've four matches at home which is a bonus but it will be a struggle for Monaghan this season.

Mayo will be without S O Shea,L Keegan,C Barrett,D Vaughan,L Higgins and T Parsons for this game and considering Monaghan beat Mayo in MacHale park last year in the league they really should be winning this game.

What will the pitch in Clones be like after all the rain? Has their been any game on it so far this year?

both teams need to win this game, the looser will be looking at Div 2

Ideally if Mayo won their 4 first games retain Division 1 status for 2019 then use the remaining 3 league games to blood new players, results wouldn't matter, but in Mayo we do things a##e ways, struggle in the first 4 games and lose then panic with the last 3 having to win and forced to start our strongest team even if they are carrying an injury or unfit. Remember Mayo had to win their last few game in both 2016 and 17 and then were beaten by Galway in the Connacht championship so this tactic hasn't worked. This game v Monaghan is a tough game to call, Monaghan will want to win at home and if the early part of the 2017 league is anything to go by they will be strong. Depends on what Mayo team show up, I predict a draw or a good Monaghan victory, can't see Mayo winning this away especially as it's the first game of the season

Hard to see Mayo winning this, given some of the injuries to key players and that most of the panel have just returned from holidays, Monaghan's fitness base would be better.

That makes absolutely no sense. Mayo must be in Division 1 for about the last 30 years.

The squad that went to Malaysia were doing fitness sessions there. Not sure how much and I'm sure they holidayed well but considering they'd be one of the fittest squads when at their peak they won't be too physically unfit. They'll lack match fitness though.

Agreed. One example would be Roscommon lost to Monaghan at home in round 1 2016 yet still went on to reach the semi final while Monaghan didn't reach the last 4.

EVERY year Mayo are predicted by a fair number of people to go down but we always do enough and we are the longest serving team in division 1. I think it's 20 years at this stage.

Yes we flirt extremely close on occasions especially lately but always do enough to stay up.

Someday the doomsday merchants will get it right I suppose. It's championship mayo are gearing towards.

David Gough decided that game in the end. Darren Freeman out in front in the 4th minute of injury time pushed clean in the back. Had to be a free in to give Monaghan the win. But low and behold a free out for touching the ball on the ground. When the only reason he was on the ground was the push in the back. Mayo take the free and go down the field and kick the winning score.
A draw would have been a fair result.

But in the end an enjoyable game in January, with both teams in experiment mode.

Think an Evan Regan free kick in the first half was incorrectly waved wide but I wouldn't have been too disappointed with a draw.

Aidan O'Shea simply embarrassing, the incident with Ryan Wylie wasn't even a yellow card and O'Shea rolling around on the ground. I'm now angry with David Gough and his officials

Great win for Mayo, going to Monaghan and getting a win is no mean feet.
