Denis Bastick retires.

(Oldest Posts First)

Didnt see a thread but thought it only right to acknowledge his retirement. For a man who came into the the Dublin senior panel in his late 20's he clocked up a remarkable medal haul:

5 All-Ireland senior titles (2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017)
1 All-Ireland junior title (2008)
11 Leinster senior titles
4 National League titles

When you look at some of the players that have passed through our midfield over the years and haven't got close to that its remarkable, yet he had the fortune of being part of great Dublin teams.

Always dependable and a clam head in the frenzy he was always understated but at times pivotal in the years of 2013, 2015,2016 in my opinion and gave many other lads the foundation to pay.

Wish him and his family all the best in retirement, he will be missed.

Delighted for the man to have won so much!

Only came into the team in his late 20s and then to leave with 5 Celtic Crosses is pretty impressive.

He was a big player for Dublin in 2011, 2013 and 2015. A real steady influence around the middle and dovetailed nicely with whoever his partner tended to be. MDMA a lot and latterly even Fenton when he first arrived on the scene.

Even scored a point in the All-Ireland Final in 2011 too!

Well done Bastick.

Denis really turned himself around, used to be thought of as a weakish player in his defensive position. But he really excelled at midfield for us and like you said, its great he won so much, best of luck Denis.

If he came off the bench in 2014 against Donegal in AI semi-final we might be talking five in a row now!

Scandalous how he was left on the bench and he suddenly was lauded as an important panel member from 2015 on

He was integral in 2011 but when Gavin came in I don't think he fancied Bastick that much. He was used as a sub mainly in 2013. Had a great final actually setting up Bernard Brogan's second goal with a great run through the middle and perfect pass.

Take a look at it on YouTube again. He has literally just come on the pitch and Aidan and Séamie O'Shea comesover and give him a little push, the usual auld stuff. 30 seconds later and Bastick is streaming in on goal with the two O'Sheas 20 metres behind him!

He did really well to work his way back in 2015. The switch to a more solid defensive platform was good for him and I thought he had a good year that year.

You have some memory! What you described all happened in about 20 secs

Good luck to him on his retirement.Got the most out of himself after a late start and probably right time to call it a day.
Funny how fortune can favour players and timing is all important when you consider some of the players who never win or even get to play in an all ireland final.

Dennis proved that sometimes it's down to hard work pigheaded perseverance, not always the fastest most skillful, a role model for the underdog , he certainly turned my opinion on him , hope he enjoys good fortune with his club .

Fantastic midfielder and great presence in Midfield, a lot said about his influence a few years ago but I'd say he did a lot of work very recently keeping the standard high in the A v B matches.
