Read that article, he seemed to be hinting that he would have got an all star but scarified himself for the team. never thought he had much football in him but he was a leader and a presence that we should certainly do with now at midfield. Sort of player opposition star men didn't like very much. Deserved an all star for almost taking the head off Galvin in 07. I think Hugo would still have lost out in '85. Jack O'Shea and Willie Joe Padden were the All Star pairing that year. Jacko was the best footballer in the country at the time and Willie Joe was a favourite of the media with his high fielding and this was before the "Hay Wrap!!! Monaghan lost out on 2 certain All Stars that year but they were at Full Back, where Gerry Hargan won an All Star for hanging onto Colm O'Rourke's jersey and Full Forward where Eamon Murphy lost out to Paul Earley for reasons passing understanding.

I thought Gerry McCarville's omission was the most unfair; surely the best Monaghan player never to win an All Star. If remember correctly the sending off was an(other) Ger Power dive to the ground with hands clutching his face...as if he'd been decapitated when he just been pushed over (or am I thinking of another game entirely). I never liked Power. Playacting and winning at all costs is nothing new. Nearly didn't get in to that game because I think about 30,000 more people showed up at the replay than the first one and some of the gates were closed early. The McCarville decision beggared belief, I remember there was an article complaining about it about it in one of the following league programs. Small counties always get a raw deal. Then the week after the All Stars, Gerry got sent off in a League game v Armagh and was ineligible for All Star consideration in 1986. The rule that excluded players from All Star nomination if they had a sending off was the stupider ones in GAA history. I remember Dessie Mulligan was in the running for a nomination in 1979 and in the few club league games before the announcement of the nominees he got battered round the place by all and sundry.

had to laugh when I read this.. fact of the matter is he was never within an asses roar of ever wining one so pinch of salt reading this article springs to mind...solid presence in the team but regards point taking/fielding and football ability he fell a long way short in the top level stakes.. for dick to think that he was all star class says a lot about him.....there is plenty of rooters and spoilers like him playing the game at club level never mind county level... Only junior double! You would nearly think that currin never anything before. Currin won the league and championship double in 1935. Pat mcgrane, currin's most famous played for currin for awhile. Might buy a brick to honour his name in the new stand! Just bought 1 brick and inscribed is bernardo knocks abu. Currin's motto was "currin, sons of st patrick,ever through to faith and fatherland" not enough space to put that on a brick.
