The positive Sligo GAA thread

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

IMO it is affecting football, that is inevitable but I see it as a positive although I have friends that don't. There probably is a link to the decline in football out west but for me it says more about the strength of Football within the county and hows its being run. I can see why players or good GAA men turn there backs on Sligo football and that needs to change.

My club is in the early stages of competing in Hurling and we could lose players or have internal conflicts as other clubs have had. But here's the thing no matter what team I was involved in players have to have freedom and choice to commit or not. If they want to play football or hurling or both so be it. Some players find it more fun and I'm all for that and even those that want both hopefully they can. And there's the crowd that don't want to play football and only have hurling left so its great that they have some access to the GAA. The more kids, teenagers etc.. playing GAA the more likely they'll be reap the benefits socially, mentally and healthwise etc.

The football side of things needs some inspiration right now and a wake up call is a good thing. There were great leaders in the u17 hurling team performance on Saturday and I was immensely proud of them and they will have gained so much confidence not just in sport but it will transfer in to their normal lives knowing they can achieve things and they will have great memories from this year to look back on.

Any news on the current Sligo panel for 2019 and how is it coming along. I heard today that Stephen Coen and Keelan Cawley are playing for the Garda College this year in the sigerson cup. This will hamper preparation as the panel is very young and I can only imagine there will be more boys playing for colleges also.

I heard a lot of big names out, Harrisson retired, heard Donavon gone too, Kyle Cawley is out thus year, and McDonnell too could be a tough year..although I've heard some of the young guns are going well

Hard to find positives in Sligo GAA at present.

Our best underage player of last 20/30 years off to Australia today. Aussies sniffing around another up and coming underage talent. One of our best players and captain last year cannot commit due to a debilitating hip injury. We may have seen the last of McDonnell in a Sligo Jersey unfortunately.
At least the County board debt has been reduced over last number of years due mainly to hiring cheap and inexperienced mamagers.

Inexperienced manager yes that was done, I would not call them cheap. Flanagan wasn't inexperienced nor was Carew. You can have experienced poor managers. The debt had to be tackled or we were certainly going nowhere. However we were not even competitive at U.17 last year that no one seems to mention and our U. 20 team only lasted one game also. So when there is no talent coming through the ranks it's impossible to have a good Senior Team. We now have the facilities so it is time that we got the funds and the Coaching channelled into the underage structure. Surely it's time to call certain people to account for the poor showing of Co teams at underage. There are Games managers who are years in the job and nothing to show for it except jump from one good Sligo Schools team to another if there is a better chance of success. MC. Donnell would be a huge loss and it's very sad to see a player with such injuries at a young age. Red Og is very talented and would be a big help to our County. Temperament is very suspect with him and he will need to sort this out very fast. Even at that the odds of making it are stacked against him as lots of players return here again. He is right to go and we wish him well.

Carlow should account for Sligo in the league opener. How do Sligo folk feel about the game ?

If someone has anything positive to say about Sligo at the minute I'm all ears, 2019 will only bring more suffering starting tomorrow.

Whilst I hate losing and the second half scoreline isn't great but there was a strong wind, given the amount of turnover of players and debutants I'd imagine there must alot of positives to take from today into Carlow, Murphy's 1-8 hopefully signals a massive year from him, well capable of it, he was named capt on the programme, toweys 0-3 impressive, if carrabine kicks on what a player he will be, showed so much promise last yr, McIntyre and marren on bench too, any sign of Liam gaughan? The initial reports are sligo fans pleasantly surprised, work rate was very good and we reacted well to going down a few pts at various stages. Taylor has a good football brain and it was nice to hear the pride he has in taking on the job but for me adding Joe Keane and Greer to his backroom team are masterstroke, both spoke very well on oceanfm final whistle a few weeks back, actually Keane the coach is pretty inspiring and has great cv

Must be no one on this forum from West Sligo as no one has mentioned the fantastic achievement of Easkey winning the Connacht title and after yesterday's game they are heading for Croke Park. Well done to the Sea Blues.

Well I wished Easkey and all my friends over there the very best before the match and it's great that a Sligo club are in an All-Ireland final. If I have one crib it's that Easkey in all fairness should be at a minimum an Intermediate club and quite possibly a Senior club. Iascaigh Abu!

It's a valid point Maggipie but nonetheless great achievement and great for the West Sligo Area, hopefully go on and win it and produce a few good county players off it. Well done and best of luck in final, would love to be home for it.

The reason they are junior is simple. They didn't win a game for a year and a half. They were deservedly junior on merit. Great to see Gavin Cawley going to Leitrim as manager of the ladies. He is better off there than refereeing.

I thought you would understand the nuance of what I said. I completely know why they are junior, but it's obvious that there was talent in abundance there ,but it was being wasted. It will be great to see a Sligo team beat a Kerry team in an All Ireland final.

Sligo scored 4 points in the second half compared with 3 points in the first half, that's positive.
