The positive Sligo GAA thread

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I get the impression from other threads that people want to feel more positive about Sligo GAA, especially the CB go out of their way to create a positive perception of themselves and Sligo GAA, I have noticed people only see the negative in posts because they are programmed that way whilst filtering out the many positive things you say, this thread is to help them and for anyone who wants to post anything positive happening or happened in Sligo GAA recently and this is the thread that if you haven't got something positive to say, say nothing.

Niall Murphys selection for the Ireland International rules team, great news, he belongs at that level and will learn a lot. He's getting better every year. Best of luck to him and Ireland.
Cathal Coreys appointment - his hunger will not be matched and he will want to prove a lot of people wrong esp counties that let him slip through. He will have learned a lot from McGuinness in his early days.
Scullions reputation is high as a coach and was a great defender
Rooney knowledge of the u21s, energy and enthusiasm
St John win in Connacht, was impressive
Tourlestrane winning back to back, now primed to peak in Connacht hopefully
Balymote to do well in Connacht Junior Championship
Eastern Harps performance in Final surprised a lot of people, they put it up to Tour, they are also in Minor A, future bright there
Scarden COE- credit to Sligo GAA
4 Home games in the NFL for Sligo 2018 is very important, Derry, Wexford, Longford, Fermanagh - Westmeath Armagh and offaly away
If we beat London we have an home semi final in CSFC having played both Galway and Mayo away last
Summerhill success in recent years
Attracta's rising in the A and coming close
Minors of 2015 and 2017 progression
U21 Team 2017 were close and u20s next look strong
U15 development team looking promising
Sligo GAA Coverage of the County finals was top class, hope to see our home games in NFL streamed.

Because I'm such a positive person here is 17 things to start it off, feel free to add anything

Crowd numbers in Spring are low enough, streaming games would affect attendance.

Another couple -
Sligo GAA website is top class imo lots of positives here, it has everything you could really want
Sligo twitter feed is always kept up to date and gives most matches score by score updates which is gratefully appreciated
Great photos of matches captured
Sligo GAA youtube channel is great, watched the u15s recently on there, etc.. hopefully that will extend to manning cup etc..
Match day programmes are always very good and professional

Markievicz park is a great ground and a credit to all involved, the developments over the years have been fantastic, I remember it in the early 1990s, in the next 10/20 yrs it would be great if we could find a way to get capacity to 25,000 so we could have home senior Connacht Finals, Feel we could win more Senior titles if we had home advantage. Maybe move dressing rooms back to the corner of the parking area and fill in that corner with tunnel and then maybe add a few rows to the dugout terrace, could we revamp the stand make it steeper with added seating and re roof, I know there are probably height restrictions there

Now that's the post I like to see - very positive Sligonian.
Very well said, look we can all have negative feedback of what has been done in the past but as you said there in your points more positive than negative.

We might not get promoted this year but good chance with 4 home game, main thing is that we get some new additions, heard there is a good mix of new talent in for training on Sunday - hope we can find a few county stars of the future.

Great win for Calry Hurlers today, representing Sligo with distinction once again in Connacht. Good luck in the final.

This thread is a breath of fresh air. We all know we are a small county mixed in with the Galway's and Mayos of the world. We continue to punch above our weight and I am optimistic for the future. Best pipeline of talent I have seen in a long time, COE etc..
Johns must be in with a good chance on Sunday considering the Fiasco in Galway.

Fair play to you Sligonian for making us realize the glass is more than half full.

"Punching above our wait", how about some facts.
Mayo and Sligo are of a similar socio-economic profile except that Mayo is twice the size of Sligo in area and population , broadly speaking.
Therefore if we punch above our wait , we should have won more than half of what Mayo have won over the last 133 years. One stat tells you that we couldn't punch our way out of a wet paper bag -
Mayo 46 Connacht titles
Sligo 3.

Here are some facts
Mayo's population is double ours
We have almost half of our population dedicated to soccer/rugby
It's not simple math a team with twice or 3 times the pick size should win every time using a normal distribution curve
We have been in minor and u21 finals this year
We have shocked the likes of Tyrone, Armagh, Kildare. Lost to Kerry by a point.
We have been in 4? Connacht finals in 10 years
We have pride in wearing a county Jersey. I have great respect for lads that dedicate so much to the game knowing the reward will be limited in terms of silverware.

Do I wish we won more, of course I do, it I won't go there as this is supposed to be about good things.

I think we are all agreed on the main point.....we need more good days.....we are fairly competitive in the league as we are playing at our own level ...we have a realistic chance of winning most league games and will hardly ever get a bad beating. The league finals are always in Croke Park and it would be great if we could get there in 2018.

The championship however is another story. What have we to look forward to in 2018.? Hope we beat London and then we play winners of Galway v Mayo !!!!! We will never match these big guns....ok we may catch them out now and again but on a year to year basis we will never match them. We need to get away from having to meet them every year in the championship.

We need to face up to reality....we need a tiered championship like hurling has. Our players, their families, clubs, supporters etc deserve a decent run of championship games every year where we can get behind our county teams. Until we face this reality we can try all we like to be positive but it will not get us what we want. Unfortunately a lot of our Co Board lads will not admit to this reality. Until they do we will stay stuck where we are...the whipping boys for our big Connacht neighbours.

It would be really positive if all the loyal Sligo fans writing here could begin a campaign to bring about these badly needed changes. Up Sligo !!!!

I'm sorry I cannot read this drivel without a little reply:

STOP talking about this population nonsense, it really drives me around the bend. You just have to look at what Iceland are achieving in soccer to know this is totally irrelevant.

Here are some facts
Mayo's population is double ours - first of all Sligo is larger in population than Roscommon for example, they have All ireland at every level including club honours. They have 23 connacht championships to go along with that.

We have almost half of our population dedicated to soccer/rugby. How do you know this??? We are not exactly renowned for our talents in both sports. Yes we have a good soccer club but we havent much sligo representation at senior level. In fact ironically Mayo/Galway are probably better represented! Have we ever had a Rugby international?

Sorry to bring negativity on this thread but I had to!

Every single point you make can be rebutted with an equally opposite point but I wont be pedantic and do it.
The original post made the claim that''We consistently punch above our weight'' when the facts clearly show that we do not.
If that claim was made about Roscommon it would possibly hold through.

One point I will make, shock results count for nothing, we have been shocked ourselves by Leitrim, Longford, Limerick to name just three but we would not like that to define us , so park the shock results either win or lose.

By and large we under achieve and like it or not its because of poor leadership, bad planning, no imagination coming from the elected leaders of the Co. board for more years than I care to remember.
To be viable in todays cut throat sporting environment a County like Sligo has to develop a strategic financial and sporting plan.
None of this making it up on the hoof.
