Down Minor Hurling Championship Final

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I believe Down winners will play shield winners in semi next weekend or week after, with the Derry and Antrim minor champions meeting in the other semi of the Leadon Timber Frame Ulster Minor Club Hurling Tournament.
The Shield likely taking place this weekend consisting of minor teams from Armagh, Fermanagh, Donegal, Tyrone etc.

Fair play to the Crans, an unexpected but deserved victory.........credit to the lads taking them as well as that particular team couldn't even make the semi finals at u16 two years ago but showed what hard work and commitment to the jersey can do, a bit like Galgets win last year. Well done to them

They did paudi, finished 2-13 to 2-5. Extremely poor display from the crans in a game I'm sure the managers were expecting them to win. In my eyes there were too many men on the pitch just there for the sake of it, crans forwards were very flat with the exception of the number 11. Carrickmore were a very physical side although there wasn't all that much Hurling in them. However, the cran men can look upon this season as a good year as this was a team who won very little, if nothing at all, at underage level. Today was very much bonus territory for them lads.

Correct my fellow Cran, but once again we had novices along the line who think they're Brian Cody. We rode our luck against Portaferry but got caught out today. Says it all that one of our better hurlers was an U16, but he's fortunate enough to be getting picked for U17 elite squads whilst a lot of the others don't.

We won a very poor Down championship which tells us where we really are in terms of level as a county.

The development squads are doing untold damage to the clubs as they too elitism in their set up, leaving far too many club players at home kicking their heels for too long in the year. The net needs to be spread further and wider.

Carrickmore now play KL Dungiven in the final as they saw off a very fancied Dunloy team with ease in the other semi-final.

Bricktop I think 6 of your starting minor team were involved with development squads and at least two others who were invited but didn't go. That's over half your minor team so again I am not sure what your issue is. There were two squads at U14 last year with plans for two at U16 next year and a squad of 30+ at U21 next year so the development squads are expanding but short of all Ballycran players being involved I am not sure that this will keep you happy.

Niall,
That's a step in the right direction, but time must be allocated for clubs to train their teams as it seems that elite squads take up most of the hurling year.

Not sure who you think your talking to but Saturdays are set aside for development squads in both codes and have been for some time unless a club decides to train on a Saturday then there isn't an issue. IMO the problem lies with the clubs where for a variety of reasons the resources are not being put into coaching at youth level - Ballygalget is probably the exception but most clubs are struggling big time.

Not sure who you think your talking to

I do my homework.

No one has any issues with Saturdays, it's the evenings that the U17's and the minors take up that causes the problems for clubs. there needs to be discussions with clubs and agree a schedule with them to strike a balance and also not to be so precious over players and cancelling fixtures.

Would have to agree with bricktop on that one. Amount of games that got cancelled and set back due to the county minors training was farcical in my eyes. A championship final being played in November is a joke. This mid week training then also has an effect on the clubs as they cannot train as with 5 or so away at county, there simply aren't the numbers. This then leaves players in the house not getting out and training simply down to the counties many training sessions. Would like to add that I am not in any way having a 'go' at the development managers as many say on this, simply stating the reality.

We need to stop trying to blame county squads for the ills in club teams.......how many games were cancelled this year due to county games ??? One or two that's it, to try equate that for reason why teams are getting beaten is nonsense.......the minors and u17s trained at most twice a week and in many occasions only once a week to try facilitate exams and club fixtures......the way lads are going on here you would swear the county teams were training four nights a week but sure don't let facts get in the way of a good story.

Are you seriously suggesting that the likes of the Ballycran lads who were on the Celtic challenge team didn't improve massively over the past couple of years through the experience?? Biggest delay in minor championship was Ports and Liatriom saga not the county team and the fact remains that this Ballycran team like Ballygalget last year were surprise winners hence probably over achieved ( fair play for doing so) but the county hasn't been together since end of August that's 10-12 weeks ago so it's very far fetched to lay the blame at the door of the county

Collectively the young hurlers of Down reached an all Ireland minor B final, won the Celtic challenge, reached Mageenan final so collectively the talent is there but maybe spread too thinly across the clubs to make very strong club side

Yip, in agreement, but that due to elitism and a very much closed shop at this level. When some of those lads drop off from the hurling as is inevitable then we haven't developed too many hurlers.

If there are plans to spread the net wider then that's an improvement and gametime must be given to them all.

Does anyone know what's happening with minors next year? Is there going to such an age group anymore? From what I've gatherd it's being dropped at minor level although it is continuing for 1 more year at club level. Don't really understand this at all as minors is the biggest age group at underage level and is the age group all players want to be a part off. Beats me.

All intercounty minor competitions next year will be under the new age band of U-17 but they will still be referred to as Minor

AFAIK individual county boards have been given free reign to decide what age bands are used for their club competitions, Down's position appears to be carry on as before but this won't be a final position until County Convention

Down are carrying on as is for 2018, but 2019 we're meant to go to an odd set of age-groups, U11, U13, U15 , U17 and U20 IIRC.
