Replying To Sliotharyslope:  "I don't believe for a second that Wexford were flat v Clare because they were over trained. In fact, I would go as far as saying that the lethargy in our display was more psychological than physical. The standard of fitness required to perform to the optimum level nowadays is phenomenal. The quality of training and fitness coaches in Ireland is very high. These people are not chosen lightly for the important roles they play. They know exactly what is required - otherwise they would not be appointed in the first place.

Wexford had real momentum going into the league semi final v Kilkenny in Wexford Park. After losing to us for 3 consecutive games, Brian Cody devised a system to counteract our system and subsequently blitzed us in the first half of the league semi. We never really recovered. Ok you can argue that we had a tough physical battle v Galway the previous week. If that had an effect physically, how do you account for Kilkenny's tremendous performance v Limerick in the All Ireland quarter final when they played for the third consecutive week in a row, the first two being against the most physical team in the country in the Leinster final and subsequent replay?

You could argue that Wexford started training earlier in the season than Kilkenny, but Kilkenny had played 2 more competitive games this year before All Ireland quarter - final weekend. The difference lies in attitude and self -belief. Wexford played their best hurling of the year in the first 50 minutes v Kilkenny, and with a little bit of luck and cuteness, could, and probably should have won that game. Psychologically, the two defeats to Kilkenny deflated us. Once Kilkenny started to roll in the final round robin game we just couldn't seem to stop them. As a result, we lost that game and were flat v both Westmeath and Clare. Our confidence and self- belief had been knocked. I'm not a fan of the sweeper, and maybe the players themselves have lost a bit of faith in that system. Again, psychologically that could be a factor.

A big factor is undoubtedly our attitude. Anybody who knows the effects of the media on the mind will know that if you tell people the same old thing over and over again it gets into the subconscious mind and they start believing it, particularly if they are not hearing any alternative. How many times this year have we heard how difficult it was going to be for teams to lift themselves for a third consecutive week running? That attitude HAS to affect players. You can take it both ways, you can believe it and let it sap your physical and psychological energy or you can see it as a challenge. Kilkenny prefer the latter. I'm noting in particular Brian Cody's comments after the defeat to Galway and a week before they played Limerick.

Kilkenny know that anything can happen in a game of hurling. How many times down the years have we heard Cody say that and that a 10 point lead is nothing, even late on in a game? That belief that you can snatch victory from the jaws of defeat has preserved many a Kilkenny cat's life in a game down the years. How many times have we seen games where Kilkenny have been beaten where the game fizzled out to an inevitable conclusion after their opponents were so far ahead? Very rarely, if ever.

It's their dogged refusal to accept defeat that gives a Kilkenny player that extra pep in their step and maintain their incredible intensity level when others don't appear to have the same energy levels, or make a half-hearted attempt to track an opponent. If we were closer to Clare last week earlier in the second half, we may not have seemed so flat. This was borne out by the energy surge we seemed to get once we got down to a three-point deficit.

Sportspeople, be they amateur or professional can train to the highest standards demanded. The ability and skill levels are often very very similar. However, more often than not what often separates the cream from the rest of the field is an inner belief and the right mental attitude. People say 'but that's Kilkenny for you'. Why is that? It's because they have chosen to adopt that attitude, not because of their success or their style of play or ability to train players any differently to any other county."
Youre 100% right. We still have a bit of a confidence issue especially in big games after so many years in the wilderness.

Replying To logger:  "It was a fantastic win against Cork but it was a one off. You failed to mention Waterford hammered us by 10pts in an all ireland quarter final that year. That was one of the poorest performances i have ever sat through, it was a lot worse than Saturdays performance."
You failed to mention that there were six of the starting team missing for that Waterford game, that Lee Chin got injured in the first few minutes and was moved to full forward and that Eoin Moore was carted off injured in the second half.

Have to say was at a game tonight between oylegate and oulart. It just dawned on me how lively we were up front 3 years ago with big men like Jack guiney podge Doran and Andrew shore that confidence is gone out of the team under Davy (not knocking Davy). I was under the impression podge Doran did not make the cut.But looking at him tonight he was as Sharp as he has ever being with his 3 goals against oulart tonight. This guy has to come back into the panel next year to give a lot of backs something to think about. I'm sure podge plays the wexford way not the Davy way.As regards Jack guiney the ball does not seem to be hopping write for him under Davy also.Andrew shore can somebody tell me is he injured or just lost his mojo under Davy.Wexford badly need these players back in the panel.Could do with a few more from oylegate also like Seamus Casey Shane reck.Outstanding tonight.

Podge Doran left of his own accord, Guiney wasnt pulling his weight and Shore lives in Spain. Hard to see them being there next year!

Just saw the highlights there of the Oulart/oilgate match, seemed like a decent game with some fantastic scores. Seamus Casey with 2 fine points at the end, he looks very impressive. How did he go on the frees lads? Pity about Podge alright, certainly worth a spot on county team.

it is v easy for us to say player a b or c should be involved, everybody doesnt have the time to give to the modern inter county game.you need a supportive employer, etc and that is easy to say than do.

Seems to me podge left because he felt he was not fitting in under the Davy way.Dont get me wrong not having a cut at Davy but surely to god he must have as plan b.Every team in Ireland has sussed us out not if we had a plan b we could have always kept the opposition on the back foot.

As far as I can remember Casey only missed 1 free out near the corner flag.

Great to hear. As well as good from play he seems to be an excellent free-taker.

Credit to the Oylegate management team last night, they came with a system much like Wexford this year and while it worked to an extent it did cost them a number of scores in the first half, but the key factor was that they recognised this, conferred for a good 10 minutes on the pitch at half time before following the team in. Second half Oylegate scored 1-3 without reply from sending in long balls to Podge, who stayed on the edge of the square for the whole second half and finished with 3 goals and caused havoc . The point is Wexford refused to conceded that their system didn't always work and wouldn't adapt to the game they were in even when behind, I think they could have beaten Clare going man to man. Oylegate underage work paying off, some great young Hurlers coming through and great role models in the parish for the boys and girls starting out.

If oylegate could get to a semi final or even a final it would I feel do great for hurling in the county.

Wexpurebred, out of curiosity to what way you're thinking - in what way would Oylegate getting to a semi-final or even a final would it do great for hurling in the county? Any more so that should Naomh Eanna getting to one or Rathnure/Buffers Alley getting back to one?

Rathnure oulart Martin's rapps Naomh eanna harriers the alley were nearly always up senior .If you look back at the last 40/50 years oylegate have only hurled senior a couple of seasons the above have always being around. This crop of players from oylegate have something unique about them and just seem to be going from straight to strength.oylegate winning senior championship would be the equivalent of Leicester city winning premier league.

Just on this idea around Oylegate getting stronger ...

If you look historically, way back in the 70's & 80's, the Wexford senior team was based mainly around Rathnure and the Alley.
In the 90's, Oulart replaced the Alley with Rathnure still competing well. (FYI, the Alley last won senior in 1992 and Oulart won their first senior in 1994 - 14 in total since.)
The 2000's/2010's has been mainly Oulart.

The Martins now look like a period where they will be main players every year for a good while yet.
IF the likes of Oylegate or another team could join them, it would be very good for Wexford hurling.

The same gorey who hammered Oylegate in a QF last year. Yet another comment with no thought..

Lads i hate to say this cause im a real Wexford supporter go to all the games but looking at them 2 semi finals today and yesterday I thinkin them 4 teams are so far ahead of us in ways of physicality intensity skill and touch.. I just can't picture us playing like that I could imagine how bad Shaun Murphy's distribution would be under that pressure... goes to show again what pace can do for a team some one who can score aswell not a dunne but a Dunbar or a Casey... seen today what limericks corner men did with good ball... then the pace of pat Ryan when he came on unreal... really hope Davy has been analyzing the last 2 days
