Best of luck to Cavan's McKenna Cup panel representing us all tonight. I for one will be there to support my County Team and all who are giving of their time so that we can field a team. If you are unhappy with how things are then make a difference avoid the meaningless bile that passes for discourse here get involved with your club and help raise the standards all round at every level from underage up.

I am involved with my club. The problem at moment is the standard at county level and as a result players have dropped off in numbers never seen before. Aren't two of your own club men gone. One still young and had a lot to offer. Only solution is CB take control of the situation or we will have another Liam Austin situation. Don't know why posters are going on about TH when he is out of the job well over a year. We won two games last year. This year we will do well to stay division two.

The "standards" of our County Teams are directly related to the standard of our Club Teams as one feeds from the other. Cavan ranks number 25 in terms of population on the Island. Our league position over the last number of years has us higher than 25 so it could be argued that they have done well the fact that a number of less populous Counties have significantly out performed Cavan in recent times being a counter argument. The 2018 season has not yet started and Dora is down on the standard of our County Team and taking a pop at men who have put in a lot of hard work for little reward in the name of Cavan Football in the past but now are no longer available.

I don't see where Dora had a pop at any player. He had a pop at the county manager. Anyway we will soon see what he has made of as this year he has no excuses. My personal opinion is we will do well to stay in Div 2 but I hope I am wrong and will gladly admit as much if things work out well.

Yes from here on in now the finger points in one direction and the buck stops at the manager. I said last year it was unfair to say anything about him but from here on in they are his selection not mine not yours not Mr Hyland but his alone.
I hope to go god it's not player power by that I mean players not willing to commit because of the new manager. Lot's of questions will be asked I am sure. If it's player power it's a different type scenario than Liam Austin's debacle.

Whats your opinion do you think we will see many victories. Was it possible to judge a team last night considering the weather. Antrim next and then TYRONE.

This will be followed in a few weeks with one of our most important years in a very long time with the League.

I hope the likes of Tomas Corr will be brought back M Lyng also there are others but for the start of the league we need them back Tomas was one of our better players against Tip having scored two points and was controlling the flow around the middle and was substituted after that Tip ran riot for his replacement did nothing but weaken our control of the game. As for bringing M.Lyng back I am sure if you are a follower of the game you will see what damage M.Lyng can do in 20 minuet as an impact substitution what a play maker and football brain this man has, he turned the gaels around and the gaels will admit this. Players with heart are alway's welcome. Also he is working in Belturbet now so it should not be an issue travel wise. Also Mackey we have no one of his caliber not to get him back would be sacrilege.
I named several players that should be looked at not one of them are in on the panel except Flynn Cavan Gaels as a reserve goalkeeper that I named.
If we intend to stay in the division 2 league we need to be giving more of our first choice players match time. I am sure several of the gaels are on the list but they are of no value if they are not getting match time. There is no time to mess about because the league is starting the last week of this month.
Can someone tell me who advises the management of potential county players there has to be advisers out there bringing back names. The matches I saw several county players do nothing for their club if they cannot play well for their club how the hell can they play well for the county. It worries me to be honest. Just take Arva as one club there were three outstanding players on the pitch for them in Breifni yet not one of them are in on the County set up. This is only one club.
I will repeat again if they have decided to bring in more Gaels players let's get them on the pitch for god sake. Look lads I am a loyal supporter of Cavan despite being a runner in as mentioned many times and I would want nothing more than to see Cavan be back up there with the best and winning important trophies. I have a grandson a year old since the 17th of December and I would love to live long enough and maybe see him play for Cavan.

Unfortunately after the 3rd of September I saw no more matches due to a major operation and then having serious complications the last week of September first week of October thank god for the Mater Hospital and as a result I was deprived of the opportunity of viewing other games and possible players for the future so my number of players noted is small.

Sean you don't sound like you were too impressed with the caliber of player that was being tried out. This is what worries me too about this manager. You ask who is advising him well I am not sure but what I do know is that previous men who worked with him didn't feel like he listened to their advice. You are also right in that all the other players need to get back on the panel asap. They cannot be just parachuting in the last week of January and expect to make a difference. We need to be getting a win in Clare.

Well they need to be back to play Antrim and get them some match time. You know I don't like the McKenna cup but this year is an exception to the rule. Bring them in now if the Gaels say they are not available until the start of the league I say forget them for they are either on the panel or not they should not be calling the shot's. Am I fuming you bet I am the conditions were bad but hey we are Cavan for god sake not a made up team of students regardless of their caliber.

Very difficult to judge a game played on 3G and in last night's conditions. That said good to get the win. Think the Antrim and Tyrone games will be a better indicator of where we are at.
Interested about the point made about who advises the manager on players available. I attended every game I could get to of latter stages of club championships and was surprised at lack of presence of Senior Team management in attendance. Who are current selectors/S&C people in the setup or what is their experience in county set ups or senior club setups? We have a lot of ex county players in strong management positions in senior clubs around Cavan, Monaghan, Longford etc, surely some of them would be an addition and would know players? Take Jayo or Mickey Graham, both have seen a lot of club football in the county and know the players they have coached and played against out there, surely they would have somethin to contribute.
It is very important that we stay in Div.2 this year and not fall further. I have my doubts about the wisdom of handin total control of our senior team to two men from another Ulster county, it could undo the great progress made in the last 8 years. it will take us another 10 to recover if that happens.

I missed the game last night but seems like we were pushed all the way!

Good to see McKiernan hitting a few points and I would have hoped that he would have made more of an impact last year.

Anybody that was at the game able to give a report on the game? This would be a luxury seeing as even media outlets give nothing more than a couple of lines.

To be honest hard to give a report on the game. But one incident springs to mind Cavan forward in possession of the ball two St Mary players tackle him he kicks the ball back out to the middle of the field a St Mary's player collects it and they went on up and scored a point from this. All I could see from this here we ago again another fecking six years of forwards afraid to kick on. Would it not have been better to kick it into the house and hope a Cavan player might get it instead of doing what he did.
Same of the same torture we have had to put up with for too long now. Time for change.
I don't know what trainers are paid if they are paid they should earn their money if they are not well then there is no argument.
We need a trainer that is rugged impressionable creative knowledgable and a no nonsense person maybe things might change.
To be honest it's sole destroying to watch what's going on with our county senior team over the last few years and it looks like more of the same.
I mentioned to a person in management at the start of the championship to get 4 people from outside the county and get them to watch as many matches they could and come back with names they thought might play well for our county, the people would have no connection to anyone and would be unfamiliar with who they see and also would not be aware if they came through the system or not and even their age. Did this happen I don't think so.
We have to stop listening from home people for they only relay back what others might be saying beside them.
I like to think I make an unbiased opinion of a player I might think is playing well pity more don't do the same.

Positives from game-
Great defence as always, on numerous times managed to swallow up St. Mary's forwards and get turnovers.
Conor Madden and Niall McKiernan played brilliantly in the forwards. Cole and Magee had good moments but didn't have as big as a sway as the other 2.
Flanagan played brilliantly as a sweeper and came away with loose balls in the backs a few times, but when he was marking Burns from St Marys his weak defending was shown.
Oisin Keirnan and Ciaran Brady played well in half backs and full back line was solid, if not spectacular too.
Subs Thomas Galligan, Darragh Kennedy and Conor Brady played well off bench.
Kickouts and stopping their short kickouts was very good with Cavan winning most kickouts and a few of theirs in second half.

Improvements to be made-
Should have brought Moynagh and Daly in earlier to see how they would play rather than a cameo at the end.
St.Mary's missed a few 45's and a few frees at the end which culd have drawn the game or won it for them.
Half the squad from last year in the stand for the game, Mackey, McVeety, Clarke and McKeirnan were watching but not in squad, need these players back and would rather them back sooner than later to be match fit for the league along with convincincing Tomas Corr and Fergal Reilly to re join the panel as they were great last season, especially Reilly who should have been starting the games at end of championship and wasn't.
Cavan played better going forward than i have seen in a few years but there were moments when the game slowed and they returned to the slump of passing across the field and backwards, one such time leading to a loose ball which no one but the St Marys full forward chased and they got a free from.
Goal mouth scramble at the end went out for 45, very lucky not to have conceded a goal at that stage.

Great progress? We are a division 2 team who lost to an injury ravaged hurling county, at home, in last year's championship.

If that's what you call progress, I'd hate to see what failure looks like.

Good synopsis. However we were thankful to Galligan for brilliant save in first half and they missed a couple of one on ones. His kickouts were top class. Also thought Jason McLoughlin was very good and turned over some nice ball. And the Philips lad had a good solid debut too. Pity to see David Brady of so soon because even on throw up and run he showed drive.

"injury ravaged hurling county" who reached the All Ireland semi-final the year before might I add. We were in Division 3 in 2014, we are not the best team in Ireland, we will lose games, we have made great progress, it would do well not to discredit the work of the county panel by comparing them with unrealistic standards.

Hopefully David Brady gets a run against Antrim, he deserves it after getting injured 30 seconds into the first game of the season. Have to agree about Galligan's performance, I'm always nervous about him though as last year he had poor games for kickouts and they cost us so hopefully that's an area he has improved upon. Would love to see a much more attacking team and gameplan against Antrim as they're the weakest team in our section as Offaly showed last night that by playing attacking football or "The Kerry Way" as their manager put it, is the only way we'll have a chance at Tyrone in the final game of our section. The Dr McKenna cup may not be important silverware wise, but if we get to semi final, it would be great as we would have played Tyrone and another section winner, maybe Donegal and would give the lads a good game to be more match fit before the league starts.
