Leitrim Football 2018

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Leitrim football is slowly on the up. The argument can be made that players come through in cycles but this has to be seen as our best crop since the likes of Maxwell, McKeown and McGuinness were coming through. Plunkett, Rooney, O'Rourke, Beirne, Cullen, Dolan, McGloin, Heslin and the McGovern's etc. along with the older generation such as Wrynn, Kennedy, McGuire and Moran, Flynn Etc. Would with the right support and resources break onto 80% of county panels and are as good as any players at division 3/4 level. The excuses and lack of ambition need to stop from management and especially at county board level. I would urge that there is a large panel of players selected to complete a S&C programme over the winter and then a panel for the year picked after the FBD. This should not cost a hectic amount as there are GYMs of required standard in Carrick, Annaduff, Ballinamore, Drumshanbo, Sligo It and Manor and the majority of players in Dublin are in Colleges have top class facilities or are close to some. This will also drip back into the club scene and improve league games and then the Leitrim junior selection when the panel can be reassessed. All we need is the right management and S&C coaches to implement this programmes along with massive ambition.

Although it is much maligned I agree - Club Football is slowly improving in Leitrim. The one thing I would say there seems to be a clatter of clubs which are being cut adrift and need radical change. Senior level now has Mohill and Aughawillan as a top two, arguably and then Manor, O'Heslins Melvin Gaels (with Mulligan next year) and Carrick who are all of good standards. The intermediate this year was also the strongest in years and next year it would be tuff to pick a winner from Fenagh, Leitrim Gaels, Drumkieran and Annaduff. This cannot be let slip. Some rumours that the majority of Aughawillan players won't play for the county are both worrying and baffling, it also has to be said that there are other players who have indicated they are opting out for 2018.This needs to be resolved as we need to be choosing from a full deck if we are to stand a chance. Coaxing Paul Brennan back now needs to be of paramount importance as he is a guaranteed starter, leader and has seen the level at which a division one team operates and most of all he is a Leitrim man and should be playing with his own county, it would give some lift if he would join up. I also see that Kevin Conlan will not be joining the Cork panel next year? Anyone know what his circumstances are for 2018?

Who's opting out for 2018? This turnover of players every year is killing any hope of progression in league and championship.

I've had a go at selecting a panel of players that could complete a Strength and conditioning programme over the winter and then go onto represent Leitrim at Senior and Junior Level. One benefit of Leitrim's small population is that it is easy to see players numerous times over a year and to know who could potentially step up or not. Before anyone looses the plot over my selections I understand that all these players will not either commit or be of the required standard even after S&C but it can be no harm challenging them over the winter as it will in the very least benefit club football.

Half that squad not even tearing it up at club level so can't see them tearing it up at county level.

Need fresh blood! But half the players mentioned are not good enough. Carberry from Cloone is a interesting one he played minor for Longford and looks a player. But is he hanging around in Cloone? Alot of blow ins don't hang around. Conor Guckian from Leitrim Gaels should be gave a call also. I assume any new players will consist of Leitrim Gaels and Aughasheelin. Mohill and Manor have already been there and done that.

The same argument crops up every year and to be honest very few people even care at this stage- we develop a panel etc etc and build for the future etc etc but in reality it never happens coz lads can't/won't commit to it as it is way too much commitment. They are the facts guys. Consider if you were asked to train four to five times a week to play division four football, travel to Waterford, Carlow etc on a wet cold Sunday in February and March and come championship time get one or maybe two games. Would you do it?? That is the way the lads look at it and it is very hard to blame them. We can all sit in an ivory tower looking down and saying this and that should be done but the bottom line is that if we got the opportunity we wouldn't/couldn't do it either due to lack of interest/time constraints/financial constraints etc. Don't forget to give the commitment some people ask for many other things have to take a back seat and when you weigh it all up it is very difficult to agree that it is worth sacrificing other parts of your life to commit to something like this. Why would a lad who is twenty sacrifice heading away on holidays, heading out on Saturdays nights, heading to concerts, maybe taking up a more leisurely sport or indeed competitive one to play football for Leitrim?? How do you sell that?? Love of the county?? Pride in the jersey?? It is not the 80's anymore. They won't buy that- highly educated young lads who know what they want and they just won't accept that as enough reason. If you agree well and good and if you don't well and good. But these are the facts guys and unfortunately it will not change in the near future as any lad considering joining the panel looks on and understands that we are light years behind other teams even in the province never mind the county!! So why bother?? Yes it is a catch 22 situation I agree but that is how things are!!

Just because Leitrim Gaels and Aughnasheelin contested intermediate final does not automatically mean they are in the best position to strengthen Leitrim senior panel. i would argue that teams who reached the quarter finals of senior would have a better squad and therefore have more players that could contribute. sweet jesus, mohill or Manor would tear either leitrim Gaels or aughnasheelin a new areshole if they got them in the championship, but didnt do that to teams like drumreilly for example.

You can get one good player from the worst Intermediate team if he is good enough so achievements of teams generally means the best 15 win. I am as much an optimist as anyone just wouldn't agree with 50% of the players mentioned in the post above. That's just based on watching those players this year and most of them since they were 14. But that still means I agree with 25 of them so don't feel too down with the rejection. Leitrim Gaels have good players in Aidan Flynn, who probably needs a bit more bulk and Colm Moreton who needs more fitness but surely a county set up would enhance them in those areas. Aughnasheelin won't get hammered by anyone next year as they have a few great lads but are well coached and as a collective are well drilled in getting the best of themselves. Mind you Barry McWeeney is their heartbeat.
There are lads who work well at club level and who are vital to their teams but realistically their skill set is lacking whether it's blindness with the ball, speed of thought on the ball, or just lack of the awareness required to avert danger. If they don't do that at club level that won't just happen automatically at senior level.
County level is for players who realize that you are part of something big, you come in willing to learn, to do things faster and with more precision required at club level and most of all without the baggage of club grudges to become part of an united group whose goal is to leave the county team in a better place than where they got it. It could be a player from a team who didn't make the quarter finals in Intermediate who could tip the scales for the team.
What I am saying don't fall into the all stars trap and pick the entire county team from 4 clubs. That does an injustice to what wasn't a bad club championship at Senior and Intermediate level.
What I saw this year was older players like James Glancy of St Marys, Shane Foley of Kiltubrid, Fabian McMorrow of Melvin Gaels, Darren McLoughlin Mohill Wayne McKeon and Barry McWeeney as well as host of the older Drumreilly players leading their teams and getting so much from the younger lads around them that this is a thing we could learn from. Bring in a few older lads to guide what is an extremely young panel so they have lads to learn from. Not rocket science.

Wouldn't agree with all of them selections but no two people will ever pick the same squad. However, I would agree with the premise of picking a large squad for S&C over the winter and then reducing it for the FBD and if that is the case there wouldn't be many changes as everybody that posts on here knows that there is not an endless amount of players and it is not hard to pick those who stand out and are at the right age to develop. I would also have a look at the likes of Sean MacNabola and Seamie McMorrow again.

I agree with alot of the names mentioned here but I think its fair to say if everyone commits the team will look something very similar to this in the Bronx when we go to play New York in May. That's obviously without injuries and IF Brennan comes back and the rumours about the Aughawillan boys aren't true.
Flynn
Plunkett McGuire McWeeney
Brennan Wrynn Rooney
Moran
McGovern
Dolan Plunkett O'Rourke
Kennedy Beirne Rooney.

It will be equally tough for Leitrim to get out of division 4 next year. Apart from Laois coming down that will be tough, Carlow and Wicklow under Evans will also fancy their chances of going up. I hope Mulligan will be fit for the start of the league.
