Development of Tuam Stadium

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

In view of Galway's pathetic Pearse Stadium Connacht Final performance (again), would all right honourable gentlemen, not now agree, that not one sod should be left unturned, to ensure all future championship matches be held in Tuam Stadium..?

Ask any Mayo or Roscommon man if they'd prefer to play us in Pearse or Tuam, they'll always tell you Pearse. It holds no fear for any of them. Not a bit. But Tuam does. They just don't like meeting us there in crunch games. There's something in it. Its a bit of history and soul to it, a sense that Galway footballers in the past put teams to the sword here or went down fighting for every last ball, a sense that we're not third in the roll of honour for nothing and that this is where those teams were forged. For me, Pearse has never, ever given that sense of being our patch, a place where we could dominate visiting teams. Maybe our teams can get it to that place but not on the basis of recent hammerings and overturnings we've had to witness there.
Yes, Pearse a nice venue, in a nice part of a great town - but its missing something that decrepit old Tuam Stadium still has. Do up Tuam Stadium. Get the lights. Aim for 12,000, then maybe later 18,000 capacity in the years ahead and it'll do a great job for us when we need it.

1997 and 1999 and 2001 come to mind when we went out with whimper in Tuam stadium.

Unfortunately Galway county board is broke. So there is no money for Tuam rebuild. A 15,000 seat stadium is fine. Pearse stadium pitch is great. Galway do well on this pitch. Don't blame the Pearse stadium. Blame the team and Coach. But yes, as a long term project refit Tuam. A 10 year project.

Didn't hold much fear for Mayo in 1999 when they dethroned us fairly lively.

Roscommon should have beaten us there in 98 too.

Tuam are financing themselves. And the games will be back there eventually. There is no soul to pearse stadium.

You mention losses in Tuam but try Westmeath or Wexford for size.

We couldn't beat Leitrim in Tuam in the 90s, lost to mayo 97, drew with roscommon in 98, lost to mayo 99 and roscommon in 2001 all with one of our greatest ever sides that win 2 all irelands. I'm a fan of Tuam but don't paint it up as some sort of advantage without factoring in actual results. It's also closer to Castlebar/Ballyhaunis/Claremorris/ than most of the clubs affiliated to our own football board and is if no use to our hurling team which has a much bigger fan base.

Realistically if they are spending money on any stadium in the future it should be to bring Duggan park up to scratch so it can service both codes and with the motorway now it has easy access. Tuam as a stadium suits north galway people and Mayo and rossies. It's as bad to get to for conamara people or city people as Pearse is for North Galway people.

Ask any Mayo or Roscommon man would they rather drive 20 minutes to Tuam stadium which will be 70% full of their own fans anyway, or keep driving another 100 miles on a round trip to get to Salthill due to some perceived "aura" Tuam stadium allegedly had back in the old days.

Are you actually for real?

Westmeath weren't that bad in 2006. Leinster champs in 2004. PJ missed a close in one the same night!! Mattie Forde scored 4-7 in Tuam one day. 2004? Wet day it was too. I don't recall any 'soul' in the place that wet day either. It's getting harder to fill stadiums, and if they're not full, the 'soul' nearly always suffers, regardless of location imo. Galway came out last Sunday to play the 2019 Connacht Final, and were greeted by........silence! And posters saying the players were flat!

When all the supposed upgrades are finished then maybe some bigger games could be held there. Untill then the discussion is irrelevant!!

I always liked the idea of Athenry.
I know people will mention ownership.
But.
Proximity to Motorway M6 and M17
Rail Link
Brilliant Surface
Proximity to the town
Easy access from Dublin, Limerick, Cork.(neutral venue)
Close to Hotels, Galway/Oranmore
Close to Football and Hurling traditional strongholds as well as the city.
Lots of parking between the motorway and the town.
Central within the county.

very tight for football though and a over zealous announcer who doesn't allow anyone on the pitch at halftime ;)
otherwise agree with everything else

Is there a story or history behind why Galway built so many stadiums in the 50s. ?

Also is there any good sites where I would find old pics of them. Particularly pre 00s Pearse
