Development of Tuam Stadium

Replying To Really:  "The best playing surface I recall in Galway was Dunmore, followed by Tuam stadium. Pearse stadium always seemed alien - surface patchy, and lacking that lush texture, not to mention soul. Same could be said of Corofin playing surface, for all its other obvious attributes. North galway clubs identify with Tuam stadium and I'm sure the serious business funding will kick in, once the issue of the Sports Capital Funding, of what should be 200,000 has been awarded, and put to bed next month. For the moment, the Dafts committee has to appear mealy mouthed until this grant is out of the way. I expect, as it will be in their own interests, that local and not so local businesses will contribute well to this project beginning 2018. The plan should be to target league fixtures, bearing in mind that league football has never been so well supported, and especially as we are in Div 1. It's also important that services such as - parking, restaurants and food outlets are brought up to the mark - huge potential. So, in my opinion, this development will become an unstoppable force beginning 2018.."
The last time i went to Tuam stadium for a match was to watch Corofin vs Castlebar. Castlebar won. No word of a lie there was 3inches of grass in most areas of the playing surface. I would not have called it a good playing surface at all. Doesn't Tuam have astro in goal mouth also? Need to get rid of that.

And as I said, that mealey mouthed approach will guarantee the full sports council grant in Nov..

You have little to be worrying about.. No one is saying it should be hosting inter county games now in its current state.. However with redevelopment it could.. after all its the home of Galway football.. ...

Tiddled up from Athlone this afternoon for the Corofin/Brigids game on the M6/M17 and was there in 45 mins. Also happened to come up from Limerick yesterday on the M18/M6 and it is very obvious how Tuam is now in very easy reach of Galway hurling heartlands.
Couldnt ye leave Pearse Stadium to the Connacht Rugby boys and use the money to develop Tuam Stadium ( although would miss that wave of 70's nostalgia I get when passing through the gates ).

And yet according to Kieran Fitzgerald in today's Independent: "The pitch was wonderful..."

It either needs to be completely re developed or forgotten about with regards to Inter County football. Great location and would be ideal if it got the millions it needs to upgrade it...... and that won't happen unless Pearse Stadium is sold to generate the funds.

The grass definitely looked too long there yesterday.Anyone else wonder why there was such a small crowd at the game considering its the home of Galway football?
On the game itself Corofin were clearly the better footballers, maybe if Bridgids concentrated of football and not 'niggle' they would have done better.

Looked long from your armchair, Trust me the pitch was fine, no issues. On the other poster about attendance, There was a reasonable turnout, again from Tv you didnt see the far side of the stand where the cameras were, i know some Bridgets fans travelled to Tuam, but hit the pubs and didnt move..

Pearse Stadium is a super pitch to play on, for players it has the best facilities , it has player parking, safe parking . Tuam had its good days and is a great venue for county finals while north clubs are involved, but ask most senior players at club level and they would prefer Pearse any day.

Tuam stadium is not capable of hosting a county game. That is all.

In Galway we have the following county grounds

- Athenry
- Tuam
- Ballinasloe
- Pearse Stadium

Sorry if I have left one out.

All of these stadiums have there merit and all cost money to keep maintained without even mentioning development.

In the old days there was the football board and the hurling board, and each maintained and developed there own facilities. Now we have one county board that maintains all the facilities.

The county boards doesn't have unlimited amount of funds, after the mountain south debacle they're actually pretty short of money. So they have decided to invest in one stadium, Pearse Stadium. This stadium doesn't suit anyone perfectly, but if the hurling community were given a choice between Tuam and Pearse stadium I would imagine they would pick Pearse Stadium.

One option would be for the county board to cut all spending on coaching and teams and invest in capital projects. Now that will probably mean the first day Mayo plays Galway in a redeveloped stadium the score line would be Galway 0.4 Mayo 15.18.

Unfortunately people need to wake up the financial predicament call Galway GAA finds itself in.

They could look to generate funds. Pearse would be worth a fortune if sold. Money would give the option of developing a proper stadium in Tuam if that was what people wanted. Not saying it is the right or wrong thing to do. Just saying there are options without taking money from coaching.

Match day experience is pretty rubbish at any venue outside of the game. Properly built/planned venue could be a revenue generator. These things take a cold strategic vision rather than some thing built on rose tinted glasses however well intentioned.

They could look to generate funds. Do you have more detailed plans how they could do this ? These ideas could be used to pay back the multi million debt on mountain south, without putting a levy on all clubs.

link You seem to suggest that we don't need a stadium in our most densely populated part of our county ? Where would the intercounty hurling matches be played ? Are you suggesting that the footballers and hurlers would play at different venues ?

Properly built/planned venue could be a revenue generator. Can you give an example of a county ground in this country that is a revenue generator ?

These things take a cold strategic vision Can you suggest a realistic vision ? that takes into account both the hurlers and footballers ?

Take it easy devrandom the lad is only giving an opinion. And he did suggest selling Pearse to generate funds.

I think Mayoman could be on to something there. Raising funds could be pretty easy once you are prepared to think outside the box. What about I'm a Gaa star - get me out of here. Get a few "north gaa stars" together in Castlehacket for a week and put them through bushtucker trials - would be a novelty. The season that is - a turkey plucking competition would also go down well. My point is anything can generate mega bucks this day and age once it's original and daft enough. But Tuam Stadium has to work..

Imagine playing the Dubs in Tuam stadium next year. Ridiculous stewards not letting opposition players and backroom team onto the field of play, making them jump a nearby fence. National anthem not played. We'd look like a third world county.
