Carlow Senior Football Championship 2017

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The first round of the Carlow Senior Championship kicks off tomorrow with Eire Og hosting St. Andrews.
This is followed by the clashes of Old Leighlin vs MLR
Tinryland vs Palatine
O'Hanrahans vs Rathvilly.

How do yee all see the first weekend going and predictions for the 2017 championship?

I think it will be Tinryland or Eire Og to stop the Pal 3 in a row this year

I think Tinryland had an excellent league campaign, however, I don't see them beating Palatine at the weekend. Palatine beat Tinryland in the league semi final this year with a severely under strength team, I think they were missing 8/9 of the players who started in last years county final. Tinryland had all of there county lads and a near Full Strength team (Diarmuid Walsh being the only huge loss for them). Both Brian Kelly and John Reid both started in that game and both of these lads are near 40!! I think Sceach scored 2 points from play off Danny Moran. Without Walsh, Tinrylands only scoring threat is Paul Broderick and if Pal can keep him relatively quiet and don't give away soft frees, I think Pal will win it easy enough.

Again. the same usual hype about Eire Og! Knocked out last year in the quarter Final and then knocked out in the semi final the year before. They havn't been in a county final in how many years? Eire Og always have a strong team on paper but this team has consistently failed to deliver - will this year be any different? Time will tell..

I understand where you're coming from completely doubting Tinryland and Eire Og as they have not performed in big championship games over the years. I just can't see any real threat coming from the rest of the county to challenge Pal and they're the best equipped to do so. . Old Leighlin are an aging side, MLR are apparently fully focused on the hurling and can't see Rathvilly challenging either.
3 in a row is a very hard thing to achieve but Pal may well prove me wrong

Standard wasn't hectic at the wwwkend. Pal game been off aside. EO looked comfortable. Rathvilly same. It will be up to the usual suspects. OL just haven't got it in the legs anymore

Anyone in at the match last night? How did both teams look?

I saw all four games, so far... Palatine by far the best team... they just swatted aside Tinryland last night and even if Paul Broderick had played, it would have made little difference... it's interesting too that their style is similar to Carlows... often had 15 in their own 45 and then counter attacked quickly... Old Leighlin and MLR was a poor game... clear MLR aren't really interested in football (especially this year) and OLeighlin looked slow, but MLR could still shock a team or two if they could be bothered... Eire Og was as poor as a team scoring 1-20 could have been against a woeful Bagenalstown... relying on two players in their mid 30's in the forwards says a lot about EO... that brings me to Rathvilly and O'Hanrahans.... The Blues don't train properly by all accounts and most of them don't even bother much with football, but they could have beaten Rathvilly... they missed a penalty in the first half and Ray Walker cleaned up in midfield area... If they got their act together and laid off the soccer, imagine what they could do?... Now, this means either the Blues are a sleeping giant that could awaken with some proper coaching and set-up and MLR are a football monster waiting to be unleashed, or Carlow club football is actually dreadful in standard... Which is it? Because I saw a team that prefers soccer (Blues) and a hurling team (MLR) show they could easily live with our real committed football teams, who train hard... curious as to thoughts... oh, and once again, I am no fan of Palatine and their general attitude, but they have a savage team... and fair play to them. They could win a Leinster if they handle things right in the coming years.

Carps how do you think Pal could win a leinster? I follow both Kildare and Carlow club scene being on the border and Carlow way below standard required for Leinster. The Pal team only beat Rangers by a point last year, and were boys against men against Vincents. Carlow had the exceptional Eire Og team, and a very good Blues team who won it once and then made no impact in Leinster, after that have the county champions had any wins in the championship? Say they could do three in a row but wouldn't put my house on it. Kildare club football on a much higher level

Tom 80, I assume Pal would win a Leinster by beating three or four teams, as is customary... unless you have some other ideas?... As for Kildare club football being "on a much higher level" to Carlow, results don't suggest so... Carlow clubs have won six Leinster titles in the past 25 years to Kildare's one.... also, last year, your champions were beaten by a Louth side who Rhode easily brushed aside in the semi, before going down to Vincent's fairly easily in the final. Pal lost to Vincents, but their young side matched them for 40 minutes.... if it looked like boys against men, that's probably because it was, more or less. Pal are very young but will get older (I assume) and improve... hence, why they could win a Leinster in the future...

Your going back 25 years. Since the blues won how have the county champions done in leinster. Very poorly. Bar eire og, don't think any team has even won a game. You rightly point out how poor the standard in carlow is and then say pal can win leinster. They wouldn't make top 4 in kildare. And the style used by carlow seniors won't win any competition, so if that's how pal are playing they can forget about hopes of a leinster.
kildare clubs are a good bit off leinster too, however we do have a number of teams that are definitely capable of beating rangers by 10-15 points which nobody in carlow can do, a team as you point out who are part time footballers. Pal, eire og, tinryland all struggle to cope with the physicality rangers bring. This physicality is common place in kildare

Pal only beat rangers by a point in the quarter final, but Pal beat them by 10 or 12 points a couple of weeks before that in the last game of the group stages. Rangers were high in confidence after beating Eire Og the week before and Pal prob went into the game not expecting much after beating them so well in the group. Pal didnt win any games in Leinster, true! but the first year they won it they lost to Port Laoise in the first round by 2 points, who like Vincents have been there or there abouts one of the strongest teams in Leinster... Port Laois went on to lose to Ballyboden (the eventual all ireland winners) in the Leinster Final that year by a point. The second year they lost to Vincents in the first round by 4/5 points. They havnt been given an opportunity to get a good run at Leinster and may lack the experience.. You stating that Kildare football is of a much higher standard is laughable... Sarsfields have won 2 in a row and like Pal have achieved absolutely nothing in Leinster! At least Pal were knocked out by the eventual Leinster finalists.

No major upsets in the Championship so far really you'd have to say. Some tasty fixtures coming up in next round though. Pal will surely put away MLR to win that group and leave MLR in relegation final. OL vs Tinryland looks like a bit of a dead rubber providing Pal do the job expected.

2 tasty games in the second group though, really looking forward to them. Huge do or die game for Bagenalstown and the Blues. Think btown were good for most of the game vs rathvilly and if they play that way again they should beat the blues but if they played like they did against eire og they'll be beaten. Another big one then with Rathvilly v Eire Og. Winner goes into semi-final so all to play for in that one too but think Eire Og have been the better team so far so going with them

Any predictions for the upcoming games?

You weren't too far off with the predictions. Got the 2 in the relegation final right anyway.
The Blues are really struggling and would expect them to be well beaten by MLR in the relegation game.

The qf's:
Eire Og v Tinryland
Old Leighlin v St Andrews

Eire Og still flatter to deceive, they should be doing much better than they are with the panel they have. Still picking certain players who are well past it is really holding them back. Tinryland, have a great group coming through at u-21 level and will be very strong again soon. For now they have too many weak links and i'd expect Eire Og to win a close game.

Old Leighlin are still solid enough and are mainly an ageing side but still good enough to get through this game. St Andrews have done really well, after coming up from Intermediate. Was worried after the 1st game that they might be like many other promoted sides and would be sent straight back down. The performance against Rathvilly showed they are well able for senior football. After that I expected they'd beat the Blues which they easily did in the end. OL by 4 in a low scoring game.

Some decent enough games so far, the EO/Rathvilly game especially the 2nd half was probably the best one yet.

i agree with you there, thankfully the standard of football improved after the first round of group games. Overall I think its looking slightly more competitive than I expected.

Your Quarter final predictions look solid, at the start of the championship I thought Tinryland could be the surprise package after a good showing in the league and in normal circumstances I'd give them every chance against Eire Og as I think they are well suited their style, however I think Eire Og like you mentioned have less weaknesses than Tinryland and will react in the correct manner to their narrow defeat against Rathvilly last Sunday. It's hard to be as confident that Tinryland will bounce back after their dissapointing showing v Old Leighlin. Both teams got a wake up call, Tinryland will hit the snooze button while Eire Og get down to business. Eire Og by 6.

Old Leighlin v St Andrews as a contest could maybe be compared to Mayweather vs Mcgregor. OL are full of experience and have done it all, St Andrews in their first year at senior level showed lots of promise but as seen against Rathvilly their lack of experience proved crucial. Old Leighlns physicality and experience will probably be too much for St Andrews. OL by 6.

MLR v O'Hanrahans. Neither team are looking in great shape lately however MLR always have the ability to rise to the occasion, Despite having more distractions with Hurling I think Rangers will pull themselves together and beat the Blues comfortably. MLR by 6.

Can anyone tell me the draw for the Leinster Club Championship this year?

You had the last games fairly spot on but I have a couple of contradictions!

Tinryland and Eire Og looks like the pick of the bunch for next round of games. Eire Og have the better form so far but it has to be said they had the easier group. They put away a poor St Andrews team who were down to 14 from 15-20 mins in when there was only 1pt in it. Was easy to look good from that game. Then comfortably beat the blues who look like the worst team in this years championship. The only test they had was rathvilly and lost a tight game there. Tinryland still may be the surprise package for me. If they bounce back well and perform I think they will shock eire og and go through. Tinryland by 3

Looking forward to OL and St Andrews will be another close one. OL have all the experience but I think the pace of St Andrews forwards can cause them big problems. Going with another upset in this one and think St Andrews by 1 due with 2/3 goals getting them there.

Agree totally with MLR and the blues. MLR will find enough on the day to keep themselves up and stay focused on the hurling.

Semi Finals:
Pal vs St Andrews
Tinryland vs Rathvilly

Two good matches to look forward to. Rathvilly look to be the favourites but I wouldn't rule out Old Leighlin. Couple of close matches will have helped them this year.

Pal and Eire Og will be harder to call. Pal on paper look strong but Eire Og have all ready accounted for them in the League Final so they will be going into this with a win behind them so anything can happen. A seat in Dr Cullen is on the cards this Sunday......
