The fastest footballers past & present

Michael Donnlen, and Sean Óg de Paor has some pace in their legs! Dereck Savage on that team as well.

Currently, Danny Cummins as a whole lot of pace as does Shane Walsh

Shane Walsh and Michael Donnlen also have/had a lovely running style/form.

Replying To jimbodub:  "Kev Mc is pacey..

Great turn of speed while having excellent control of the ball

He's scored many a goal due to his pace and direct running

Would you consider him not to have pace?"
Definitely. No point in talking about pace unless it means leaving your marker s) trailing in yer wake. Kevin Mc often puts the burners on to great effect.

For Dubs, McCaffrey obvious but Paul Mannion can shift through the gears too when required. Probably our fastest forward?

The famous Kerry 70s/80s team had some fast boys. Watching the old games, Pat spillane fairly milled along. Didn't he do the sprinting in 'Superstars'? (source 'Reeling in they years fried Irish skin special).

A old(ish) lad at work told me he played soccer against Ger Power and Power was uncatchable when it pushed the ball ahead of a defender.

Then again I was probably comparing them to the bold Jimmy 'the bolt' Keaveney.

I wouldn't consider him that fast compared to the likes of Mannion or McCaff, good direct runner with ball in hand but not pacy compared to the 2 mentioned and the likes of Ryan McHugh, Keith Higgins and a few more. If the Cork hurlers were allowed into this it would be game over for everyone!

Replying To The_Fridge:  "Eamon Wallace from Meath. not sure if he is still playing. he was a 100 or 200 metre sprinter I think in athletics and ran for Ireland. He was very fast, scored a great goal against Tyrone a few years back.
I have seen many players who are extremely fast runners but you put an O'Neill's football in their hand and it takes them an hour to run the length of the pitch(sic). Ball flys up in the air, off their knees, elbow, head, arse. I would rather have a player who has the basic skills off soloing and bouncing the ball at pace than someone who is just a speed merchant."
Very true about speed merchants with no control. The likes of Tomas and Marc O'Se weren't speedsters but the looked quicker soloing a ball than without it.

David Beggy of Meath had great pace but in my opinion wasn't the most skilfull. High solos and a bit unorthodox looking kicking the ball at times. He possibly played more rugby underage. I know he was fullback in a talented Blackrock club side for a while.

I marked M Donnellan in a club game back in the day, what a nightmare that was. Absolute beast!

No doubt Jinksy was fast and beat a greyhound in the 90s at Shelbourne, Jinksy had half a lap start though. Paul Curran was a flyer at right half back for Dublin and so was Kevin Moran in his day. Jack Mac is the fastest I've seen in a long time. Soloing at that pace is an art form in itself.

I remember Paul Mersof Arsenal telling me Geraghty was one of the fittest players he ever came across when he had a trial with Arsenal

David Beggy for sure, the breeze of him going by me nearly knocked me over :D
James McCarthy no slouch either. Obviously McCaffrey and I remember Wallace of Meath, he could move big time.

Replying To McFan88:  "Stephen Kelly from Limerick was one of the fastest players on the inter county scene in his pomp. Played for Ireland in the international rules, should have won at least 3 munster medals and also won a few AIL rugby medals for Shannon playing on the wing. I could be wrong but I think he also played for Cork City on the wing for a season."
Should have won at least 3 Munster medals? At least 3 means he should maybe have won 4 or 5. Very generous considering he won none. I know he lost 4 Munster finals but to say he should have won all of those is ridiculous. He played in 4 finals and they took Kerry to a replay in one and lost narrowly to Cork in another. So I'd say he should have won at least one Munster medal. Not disputing his pace though.

Sean O'Sullivan from Kerry was exceptionally pacey player. Remember him skinning Sean Og de Paor in Croke Park in 2002 quarter final.

Jack McCaffrey, Karl O'Connell, Paul Barden, Stephen Kelly were all serious movers

Jack McCaffrey is the obvious one. Darran O'Sullivan from Kerry certainly was exceptionally fast, not sure if he lost a bit of pace by now. Our own Sean Murphy in Carlow is unbelievably fast, just raced past everybody all year until Drew Wylie put a stop to him last Saturday with a cracking shoulder.

Have to agree with this ,, Mickey didn't believe in cutting inside a player he just kept her lite around the outside,, came on for mayobridge thirds 2 weeks ago and scored 4 points from play , unbelievable talent
