Think your info wrong mate. J Duignan is a very good man but defo not been a Westmeath Selector and Hickey was never asked so i dont know where your info is coming from. I do know the senior manager has talked with a lot of people but nobody has agreed to a selector role yet. I think it is a joke that a manager from another county gets the job and has no backroom team at all. Just starting to be a joke now and again we are the laughing stock announcing a manager with no backroom team so funny.

So dont bother supporting them or waste your time on here then. While i agree with your assessment on our prospects i'll certainly give the man a chance. He's working with a poor lot, but they are the best we have.

This 'poor lot' has got to two Leinster finals. How many of those have we reached in 130 years????? jobber (Westmeath) - Posts: 1459 - 26/10/2017 08:37:55 2058056 Link 0 |
jobber thats really not a huge achievement given the state of Leinster football over the last 5 years.

I think the complaints are justified, the club championships are all but over and most county teams are back in training in some shape or form from next week and no selectors in place. If you take on a manager he should have a team ready to go from the start.

As far as I am aware all selectors and backroom are in place for football and hurling and county board meeting in a weeks time will inform all to be ratified .

I didn't know competitions will start before Christmas. Seems a bit strange. Kelly should be drawing up a provisional squad soon in next few weeks. XPAC (Westmeath) - Posts: 86 - 28/10/2017 15:32:37 2058795 Link 0 |

I am hearing Damien Gavin of Rochfortbridge and Laois's Sean Dempsey as selectors with Colin Kelly ? Dempsey was over Edenderry this year. BigSur (Westmeath) - Posts: 1131 - 05/11/2017 17:45:21 2060632 Link 0 |
Did not hear Dempsey but did hear Gavin and Gavin will be good, I hope your wrong with Dempsey he took over Edenderry who are second best team in Offaly and are Rhode nearest rivals but were terrible under Dempsey so i do hope your wrong on this one as what would he know about Westmeath football. Taught the idea was to get local selectors or is this more bull and smoke screen becasue they took on a manager who nobody would work with from his own county. I have never heard a manager who doesnt have his own management team and it spells alarm bells for me.

Well it looks like he is in. Dont know anything about him but I do agree with paul that its very very strange that nobody came with Kelly. Every manager I know has his team in place or at the very least the trainer in place and the S&C coach. Kelly had nobody very very odd I must say. Anyway there in now and who knows might be unreal so lets back them but still hard to have a louth man over us joined by a laois man. Do we dislike our own or afraid of them

Looks like Dempsey and Gavin alright. Seemingly Co Board meeting this Weds to ratify. Don't know Dempsey but seems to have a good CV. Although it didn't seem to go so well in Edenderry. Gavin will obviously know Westmeath football very well so should be a positive move. I assume there will be a few more helping out. Best of luck to them all. Hopefully they will bring in a few new players to mix it up a bit but that will be a post of its own ! BigSur (Westmeath) - Posts: 1131 - 06/11/2017 13:48:27 2060772 Link 0 |
Does the Westmeath Indo say that Gavin is the u20's manager? the21yardline (Westmeath) - Posts: 178 - 09/11/2017 08:20:02 2061337 Link 0 |
I think it does, this is a bit worrying, hes a good guy but has little or no experience at managing a team.I hope the lad does well but you don't give a guy an intercounty team that has no experience.

Exactly. But maybe there wasnt exactly a queue forming for the job.

Your dead right there not one club in the county put a name forward, I tell you one thing Damien Gavin will be very good tyrrellspass lads loved him and he knows the game and will call a spade a spade

I'd have no issue with Gavin leading the U20's. I assume John Keane wasn't interested as the outgoing manager ? I recall he didn't sound too pushed either way when interviewed the Dublin defeat. Gavin is a senior selector too so I wonder how often he'll have the U20 squad to himself. As this is a cost cutting exercise, you'd imagine the U20's will train with the seniors most of the time. As they are a year younger than usual, how many would have been on the senior squad, not too many I'd say but of course you can have full 15 v 15 training games with such a big squad.
