Duignan very strong tonight on KK v Waterford having not been on free to air tv. I know this debate has been done to death but it won't go away. Totally agree re. elderly gaa supporters who aren't pub goers. Laois76 (Laois) - Posts: 1270 - 09/07/2017 22:24:31 2013476 Link 34 |

He was spot on , plenty of money in the GAA. He's an homest guy who's never afraid to speak his mind , fair play to him. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 2049 - 09/07/2017 22:38:05 2013497 Link 3 |
I have lots of respect for Michael Duignan as I think he's one of the best analysts around. We'd all love to have plenty of money to do everything we want in the GAA but having plenty of money, as the GAA do, should be a cause to celebrate and not to use against a prudent management committee. Perhaps there is a solution though, free access for pensioners. There'd be a few admin and technical issues to be resolved but nothing impossible. It could be a condition of any renewal contracts. It should also be noted that pre the Sky deal most qualifiers and other games were nit available at all so his father wouldn't have been able to watch it anyway! My mother is 83 and father 91, they wouldn't be too well versed in illegal streaming.

We all know the gaa has very deep pockets.sure the dog on the street knows that. why doesnt he pay for the 6month deal on sky sports for his folks..get with the times pal .sure he said his folks had to watch it in the pub sure what they probably spent in the boozer would have got them a couple of months sky sports..its the way of the world these days' everybody pays one way or the other for entertainment be it sporting or any other kind. a lot of people would have liking to watch the lions also.but they aint complaining that it wasnt free to air. That's the point though. There's a big difference between the Lions and our amateur National Games. Laois76 (Laois) - Posts: 1270 - 09/07/2017 23:40:34 2013549 Link 29 |
Now before I post my opinion I must state that I don't have sky as I can barely afford the tv licence!!!! Bain (Donegal) - Posts: 470 - 09/07/2017 23:43:45 2013554 Link 4 |
true, before SKY deal not all qualifier games were available on free to air/RTE BUT the big games were always televised...Kilkenny and Waterford was the pick of the games yesterday and we had to look at Mayo for the 2nd Sat eve in a row huffing and puffing to beat a team talked up by the GAA pundits doing the draw (no disrespect to Derry or Clare team or supporters)...now its kind of trendy to have the big headline games at 7pm on a Sat eve on SKY..I have SKY but its costly I can understand fully why some people wouldnt get it into their homes...SKY had Kilkenny and LImerick too last Sat eve which had the potential to be a great game...Cork/Wexford last year on SKY..I cant remember them all but SKY do get the big Sat eve games...Meath/Kildare a few weeks ago...I could go on and on..I dont agree with Michael Duignan on everything but I do on this one...

It's a very popular opinion to suggest that everything should be free but just to provide a bit of balance here are a couple of important points. benjyyy (Donegal) - Posts: 1427 - 09/07/2017 23:52:39 2013565 Link 3 |
Ive been saying it since the deal was signed and i'm glad someone with a profile has finally spoken out against it. There are zero benefits to this deal. No extra money, TV3 offered the same, smaller viewing audiences. Whats the benefits? Sky got more subscriptions? Only people I can see benefiting from it. gotmilk (Fermanagh) - Posts: 4971 - 09/07/2017 23:52:59 2013566 Link 5 |
I have sky and prefer when a game I want to watch is on sky because the pundits are much better however it's our national sport and should be free to view. Don't like to think of die hards who for one reason or another can't make it to the game can't watch it at home. galwayfball (Galway) - Posts: 1697 - 09/07/2017 23:59:37 2013571 Link 1 |
Sick of this myth of Sky pundits being better. It's all so sanitised and boring for both codes. Bit of flash technology doesn't enhance punditry to any great extent. Great article by Eamonn Sweeney today on Hold the Back Page in the SIndo about the merits of the Sunday Game as opposed to the alien feel of Sky. And Brolly had a point about Sky throwing in a bit of eye candy as a presenter too. All very modern and shallow. KK1926 (Kilkenny) - Posts: 175 - 10/07/2017 00:08:23 2013581 Link 23 |
Ah look you have your opinion and I have mine it has nothing to do with the technology but I can't stand brolly and spillane rants and dessie Dolan is unbelievably boring . I do quite like o shea and whelan when it's not a Dublin game he's commenting on.

Very few people would disagree with Duignan's main point about free to air coverage, but there are two weaknesses to his argument: football first (None) - Posts: 1259 - 10/07/2017 08:12:50 2013632 Link 2 |
