Deffo deserves a mention

So that I can't be accused of being "tribal", I'll go for the best in each code from my own county and nationally.
Wexford: Mattie Forde and Martin Quigley

National: Jack O Shea and Brian Whelehan

I am going to go with my favourite player from the last 20 years

Ulster. Stephen O'Neill Tyrone one of my favourite players over the last 20 years such a beautiful balanced player left or right. They played in a league semi in croke park in '13 against kildare I think he scored 6 pts from all angles left or right I remember coming out of croker in complete awe of the man. Injuries caught up with him but it all came together for him in 2005. I use love watching him play.

Hurling favourite would have been Brian whelehan or Tommy Walsh.

Replying To realdub:  "Ah Hermit, there's nothing wrong with Mullane, he's as passionate a hurler as you're ever likely to see, just skill wise he wouldn't lace the boots of most of the lads mentioned above. I mean, how could you possibly say was better than Shefflin, Walsh or Carey?"
Well realdub I'll retort by picking a few holes in your selections:

DJ, is there not an argument he never really played to his best on the big day, ie the All Ireland finals?

And as much as I love Mikey, you'd pick him above Spillane and more to the point, Jacko???

Matt Connor and Tommy Walsh tied with JJ Delaney and DJ Carey.

My own county, Beano McDonald in his pomp as a minor 1996-98 had a brilliant football brain. John Taylor hurling, pure class.

Someone mentioned Martin Flanagan earlier, he was as talented as any player I've ever seen live. Damien Healy was also a serious operator for years in my own county. I have been to very few inter county hurling games, but from club finals down through the years, the ones that stick in my memory are Joe Canning for Portumna and Liam Watson for Loughiel.

Can't believe the continued love for DJ all these years later.

A super talent alright but I'd have plenty players ahead of him at this stage.

Remember watching Rory Gallagher posting 3-9 against us around a decade ago - but Peter Canavan and Henry for me.

Johnny Doyle and Gerry Keegan for Kildare.

Gooch (honourable mention for Paraic Joyce) and Joe Deane (simply because of the buzz created in the crowd every time he touched the ball. Magic.)

Eddie Keher, for both his sheer brillance and the fact that for eighteen years at senior level level his danger as a free scoring forward never seemed to flag.
Jack O'Shea was the best Gaelic footballer I ever saw.
John Galvin in football and Mickey Graham, what a disaster his career finished so soon due to injury, in hurling were the top men in my own county.

Regarding DJ. No hurler has ever matched his skill levels at the speed he done it, none. People try to use all Ireland final displays against him for not hitting 2-12 in all of them, watch those games back and watch the impact he had by creating for others.

DJ was a brilliant hurler and an absolute gentleman but he was fond of his steps.

jacktheDub, I actually laughed out loud & applauded a couple of O'Neills points that day v Kildare you referred to. Even though against us, they were so ridiculously good what else could you do. Wonderful player...
...but for me :
Jack O'Shea & Joe Cooney

I think the heading should have included that you could not pick from your own county.
There are many exceptional players to pick from. Frank McGuigan in an Ulster final (on utube ) gave an exceptional performance with exceptional skill. Another player not mentioned and was one of the Kerry greats -John Egan
