Offaly v Westmeath

I was there and to describe as horrendous is probably being a bit kind. I doubt Westmeath can play as bad again so I expect they will win the replay but in saying that they be leaving themselves open to Offaly beating them if they are as lethargic and clueless again.

May have been a poor game but can an extra game, for the winner, before playing the Dubs will help (a little).

Athboycelt would the majority of Meath supporters living along the Westmeath border consider Westmeath as their main rivals?

I live close to the westmeath border I and most of the lads I would go to matches with would still consider Dublin to be our greatest rivals even though it's died a little the last few years. Have no great hatred for westmeath in fact if probably dislike kildare more. Maybe younger lads might feel differently as any rivalry with westmeath was probably started in the noughties.

By main rival I mean a defeat to them feels the worst, probably because I have a large circle of cousins on the western side. I was in a state of depression and nearly turned into an alcoholic after that shambolic defeat a few years back :)

Ah but after 80 years you would not begrudge your western cousins their first win over you's? I actually backed Westmeath that day and even though Meath were well ahead at half time I was still confident that Westmeath would win.

Meath and Kildare had some great clashes in 90's. Who could forget the three matches in 1997?

a sad state of affairs if all to discuss here is the so called rivalry between Offaly and Westmeath and at that it has even jumped accross to Dublin and Meath rivalry which is something to talk about on recent history (say last 25 years or so)...If 2 counties can only score 0-10 each its a sad state of affairs for modern football...we are going down the Connaught route going down this rivalry road..who cares about Mayo/Roscommon or Mayo/Galway..none of those teams on form have a hope in hell of beating any of he big guns and its only poor consolation trying to glorify the local revalry..not too many teams (other than Carlow) scored 10 points only or less this championship...such scores are evidence of the quality of the teams involved...
