Connolly interfering with match official

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Clondalkindub, barely touching(which is your opinion) is still putting his hands on him. Putting his hands on the linesman is against the rule. Contravention of that rule brings a 12 week ban. End of!!

I'm after getting sent a picture of a certain players with his hands all over a ref in last years championship , players put their hands on refs and nothing is ever said. This is a witch hunt cause of who the player is.

You cant touch a match official regardless of how you do it if you do you deserve a punishment. No witch hunt."
I've said on numerous occasions now that he should get 12 weeks. But there is so much more uproar over this because it's Dublin and Connolly. Would you agree with a 12 week ban for Patrick o Connor for putting his hand on the umpire in the first half of the hurling yesterday?

as i haven't seen a single report state what actually happened.
Annoying thing about pundits like spillane and o Rourke and other journalists is they constantly suggest comerford got suspended so Connolly has to aswell without knowing what the player actually did or bothering to analyse the ins and outs of each case it's very poor for guys getting paid to give opinions and misleading for the public."
Paddy Russell gave a late free to JK Brackens (Templemore). Comerford came out remonstrating with him so he gave him a red card, Comerford gave him a push/shove for the red card. That's as I understand how it happened.

I was literally just going to post something similar! Also if memory serves a whole host of mayo players rushed to the ref after the 2013 go so surrounding him with pointed fingers. Like you can't ban them all or should we according to lots on here. We need to apply common sense too. In my opinion this uproar is he cos Connolly just isn't like. Nothing else.

Replying To Ulsterman:  "I agree. It WAS a totally nothing incident BUT the GAA has set the precedent with McGeeney and Comerford. The rules clearly state that laying your hands on an official, or even motioning towards him/her, is an automatic 3 month ban. I think Connelly's constant indiscipline is totally disrespect to his teammates, management and fans. Yes he is the target for opposition players but so were Canavan, Stevie O'Neill, Gooch etc. You have to control your inner self on the pitch at the top level. Wonderful footballer but starting to be remembered for on and off field nonsense. Is that the legacy Connolly wants?"
Omg I'm agreeing with Ulsterman

Is it me or are all these reporter's with articles bad at counting
they say 12 weeks would put him out until an all ireland final
Yet twelve weeks from the day of the incident actually runs until the day before the second of the all ireland semi finals. So if Dublin are in the second semi final which is down for Leinster v Ulster or qualifiers then wouldn't he be available for that possible game?

How are The Sunday Game allowed to pass judgement on what amounts to a pending legal matter? There will be legal reps on both sides arguing for and against Connolly? Was even worse in 2015 when McStay was given free reign against McMahon and he was hardly unbiased. A lot of legal cases have a media blackout before a trial. The Sunday Game opinion will influence the public opinion. I think in cases of a pending hearing they shouldn't pass comment before that hearing.

That's my reading of it too. A 12 week ban would finish at midnight on Saturday 26th August. If Dublin are to make a semi final through the front door they will be playing on Sunday 27th. That fact will probably upset an awful lot of posters too.

It's not a legal matter. Legal eagles might argue the case for both parties but that doesn't make it a legal matter. It's a GAA matter only. The Sunday Game guys are there to give their opinion, I might not always agree with them either but it would be a pretty bland programme without them.

The public can think whatever they want they won't be deciding what happens to Connolly.
Do you expect the SG panel not to comment? Most of the GAA public have seen the incident by now.

Spillane was hilarious last night, I hope he had rubber pants on, he was a mixture of excited and fearful, all he could say was "Kerry, Kerry, Kerr" like a a five year girl guide as opposed to the usual seven year old. Poor old Kildare were called Kerry at one point.

Still think this there will be a middle ground here.

Its a bit of a storm in a team Cup really he will be back for the games that count fresh and fit even with the 12 week bam, hope he goes and gets a bit of Sun on his bones. He has been going full pelt club and county without yield for most of the decade, A well deserved break in my opinion. He will be coming back in against teams worn and carrying niggles. I would even be tempted to throw him on in games imagine that tactical rejigging to be done, the perfect ploy.

Arrogance from Dublin fans to suggest that they will cruise to All Ireland semi even without Connolly. He is their most important player and they are vulnerable without him. One more injury to somebody like Kilkenny or Fenton and Kerry become strong favourites.

Replying To Killarney.87:  "Thanks for getting back to me. I thought that is what you meant.

Then the way the GAA has their disciplinary structure set up is not fit for purpose. He'll probably be ok so.

I'm just frustrated at the inconsistency and overall poor quality of refereeing. Comerford is pretty much gone for the inter county season for something he did during a club game, which was rightfully noted in the referees report. I think it's extremely harsh that the ban carries over to inter county too as it's with another team he plays for. I'm sure the wise men at HQ have a logical reason for it.

The linesman has failed in his job if he didn't report the incident to the referee cos the referee might have genuinely missed Connolly's push.

The GAA are so obsessed with tinkering with championship structures that they can't seem to sort out the basic administration of the game."
Yes I agree. Comerford incident is not fair if Connolly gets off. One rule for one, different one for another . Which is total BS. I'm sure he won't be too happy about it.I actually know Comerford through friends and was quite surprised when I heard of the ban, as he doesn't strike me a loose cannon but football can do that I suppose.

From what I heard of the incident from locals in Tipp, Comerford didn't actually touch the ref but just kind of raised his hand as if he was to go for him; but this is only what I have heard. I certainly don't know Connolly but his repetition speaks for itself. Connolly sort of threatened with the finger pointing a little push, Comerford incident was probably more clear cut and that is why it was dealt with immediately, plus the ref in that game obviously felt threatened... not to mention there isn't any really pressure on the CCCC applying a 12 week ban to a Tipp fottball county player; now if that was the hurlers on the other hand.

Regardless of all that. Everyone has seen the rules. They clearly state that Connolly SHOULD receive a ban of 12 weeks for putting his hands on an official. It's that simple but it's up to the unreliable fate of the CCCC as usual.

The more i see the incident the more i feel i jumped the gun condemning Diarmuid and i am starting to feel he could be very hard done by here. As Johnny Doyle no less said today, if it wasn't Connolly no one would be talking about it. He didnt actually really do anything! The linesman himself took no umbridge even. Frankly the Carlow maoir uisce made himself look a right tit. If Diarmuid does get 12 weeks for essentially nothing its a desperate state of affairs. Wat is this game coming to. Also people comparing it to evan comeford need to read up on wat Evan did, there is no comparison. Connolly is the most targeted footballer in Ireland and if he gets 12 weeks for THAT then its a sad state of affairs.

I presume any suspension he gets will be from the day the decision is made, not last Saturday as he wasn't sent off. A 12 week ban would mean he misses the semi-final in that case.

Apologies if that seemed arrogant, of course Dublin could be beaten in a qualifier or puaterfinal.

I do have an evidance based confidence however of reaching that stage, 09 was the last time we failed to reach the semi, but like you say teams are there to beaten if the opposition are good enough. The beauty of competitive sport.

It's a debate a lot of Dublin lads are having at present mate, how much of a blow his loss will be, I tend to agree with you.

Are you confident yourself should WM make the LSF?

Why, who will stop them? Possibly Tyrone, Donegal or even Cork, if they avoid these teams they WILL breeze into the semi.

Will Murphy be brought before the ccccccccccc for calling the ref a f*^king wan*'re as he passed him leaving the field? Wasn't Philly McMahon suspended for doing exactly that in the league final?

In fairness everyone has been saying since last September that Leinster is a one horse race, that Dublin don't get a challenge until August and even the line that a strong Dublin team have ruined the province, yet you reckon that people thinking that Dublin might make a semi final is arrogant. Nobody is saying Dublin will win the all Ireland, but there is a big difference between that and getting to the semi,

its not a legal matter, its just that you have county boards using lawyers to bring legal parlance to disciplinary hearings for breaches of rules and to eek out any loop hole that can be exploited to get their man off even for what most ordinary joes would call an open and shut case.
