Replying To sideline_cut:  "How can you say that the GAA are losing followers over having games on Sky? There are more games televised now than ever before, in fact RTE are showing more games in this deal than were shown in the last deal. Only the big games were televised for years, and I don't think the GAA were losing fans then. We would all prefer if the games were free to air but personally I think its no harm giving games to other stations than RTE. The problem I have with the Sky deal is that it was sold as an opportunity to televise the games to a wider audience in the UK, which is completely untrue as they were already available on Premier Sports at a cheaper price."
Would agree without re the UK but you are wrong in a number of other points. Sky viewing figures are only a fraction of what the viewreship figures would be if the were on free to air. Only a fraction of the people that would normally watch the clare hurling watch will watch it tomorrow.
Rte are showing the same amount of games in this deal as the were the last. Up to 4 years ago far more games were shown free to air fristly by rte and then by rte/tv3 then are shown now.

Replying To Htaem:  "'It's not right' in your opinion wd45, amateur organization or not, The Gaa needs to make money to keep on funding the games and the Sky deal is just another form of revenue, simple as that.

Also it's worth noting that RTE are still the big winners here, they'll broadcast 31 games this year including all the provincial finals, all AI semi-finals and both AI finals. Sky will broadcast 20 games, only 14 of which will be exclusive (that's less than half of RTE'S total games), the most important of which is 2 exclusive AI football quarter-finals.

So basically I think we need to calm down a little, we're complaining over very first world problems here, it's not the end of the world and the majority of games will still be on free to air tv, including the vast majority of big games."
The gaa stressed strongly ar the time of selling sky the rights that there was no extra money coming from the deal. The have other reasons which nearly all turned out to be rubbish
