Galway vs Mayo

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I hear a lot of people saying Galway fans are confident of this one...I don't know who these people are but I can tell you that the vast majority of true Galway football folk are realistic and agree that Mayo are favourites and rightly so. I'd have it at around 60%/40% in terms of probability favouring Mayo. I do think this Mayo team are on the way down but it remains to be seen how steep the decent is.

I think it could be a cracker, let's hope conditions in Pearse are ok.

Mayo are 7/4 on favs which is probably right. I think Galway fans excitement that we genuinely have a chance might be mistaken for over confidence. Can't wait for this game. Galways pace versus Mayo's power. We could be blown out of the water but I think KW has made sure those days are gone.

It's a fascinating clash of styles. Hopefully a dry sunny day!

Galway camp very quiet. Most local attention with our hurlers given they are going well. We have the legs and talent to win against Mayo but my fear is our go to guys won't see enough of ball. Even in our pomp in the late nineties early noughties our defence was a bit off the cuff. We will need to be controlled in this area next Sunday as our forwards if they get ball will do damage.

Not long to go now. We've been sitting back and waiting since the league final. Mayo looked workmanlike against Sligo. I think it'll be a much different beast on Sunday....

If we're to continue our progress a win is a must and I've a feeling we can get the job done. Mayo will not be easy and it'll be tight but we should get the job done and send out a message that the tribes mean business...

Not long indeed...just listened to the Mayo News podcast to get myself in the mood. I think Mayo will get over the line IF we bring the intensity as Pat Spillane does say but Galway are a dangerous team. Funnily enough if Galway had not beaten us last year I would be more nervous about this Sunday.

It's Galway for me. Not by much though.

Galway are a better team than Mayo?

Mayo went toe to toe with Dublin over 180 minutes last year in two hugely physical and gruelling encounters, and they probably should have collared Dublin. Galway, who were soundly beaten by Tipperary, would have been eaten alive in those matches.

They caught Mayo on the hop last year in Connaught. I don't see them doing it a second time.

I'd agree with that, Mayo are one of the top 5 teams in the country, the local derby factor and Galway being at home will help, I think Mayo will go farther than Galway in the All Ireland series though regardless of who wins this.
Mayo by 4.

Yes , but that was last year. Galway certainly more physically developed (not as powerful as Mayo but gap has closed). Also Galway have found new players and have lots of options off the bench. Don't think Mayo have anything new.

That said Mayo are a level above us until we prove otherwise and are 7/4 on favorites and u couldn't argue with that.

Galway for me. Quiet is good. Good odds too.

There's also the chance that Galway peaked to get out of Division 2 while Rochford has barely had us at a canter yet. Plus the Galway forwards haven't played as good or physical defence as ours is capable of. That's my story and I'm sticking to it anyways!

May the best team win.

This is a really interesting match this year, if Galway beat Mayo again I feel it would send them backwards, but lets see if they can just keep on coming.

Mayo are serious All Ireland contender's. Galway probably are not but they have some seriously talented footballers. Intriguing game.

Great to see a bit of belief coming back to Galway football, but I wouldn't mistake this for confidence of a win. Realistically, Mayo are still the number one team in Connacht, and should win, but I wouldn't say there'll be more than 3 points between the teams at the end. Galway are on the up and have the forwards to do some serious damage. If we don't do it this year, we will next.

We're quiet too. Surely that must count for something. If we're both quiet does it mean it's going to be a draw?

Backing a draw and Mayo to win to Castlebar.

Poor club players...

Defo think Mayo will win. They caught them on the hop last year and although I think Galway have improved more than Mayo have I just think Mayo will fight tooth and nail to win this one.

I've a feeling it is going to be a cracker. Hopefully dry day with no wind in Salthill.
