Wont be any fixtures now until Galway get knocked out of the AI race. Quarter final likely to be on the 29th of July after they win Connacht.

Quarter finals according to the fixtures booklet are not until the last weekend of August so they won't be played before that date.
Not sure when the round before that is being played though.

If Galway get to an All Ireland Semi Final this year (which I fully expect us too) they'll be played on the 20th or 27th of August. Couldn't imagine Kevin will let the lads play a round of club fixtures before that!

Yes I'd imagine that is what would happen if Galway were to get to a semi final alright. It is understandable and it is also unfortunate on the club player.

Draw is on 10th July. No guarantee galway will win quarter final as there's a good chance it will be Donegal who will pose us a lot of problems...

Why don't they just go to the clubs at the start of the year and say there will be no club games between 1st July and 20th August including any league games and forget about Galway results. No reason why they could not re-schedule any league fixtures during that time to earlier in the year.

At least then club players can organise everything i.e. holidays etc. during these dates without worrying about missing any games and it is set in stone. Club managers can give their teams a few weeks after second round of club championships and let them relax for while. It is a null enough period anyway. Go back training then around mid-end of July to prepare for games in mid August.

I know it would be unfortunate that no club games would be played in them summer months but at least there is some thought put into it as oppose to the current system. Every year club players don't know when to book holidays and end up inevitably annoying someone by booking them close to a league/championship game.

I play club football and would prefer to sit down at the start of year and put a training plan in place with a fair knowledge of when games will be played .. be it in February or September doesn't really matter as long as we know.

Obviously if Galway got to the all-Ireland that would change but no club player would mind in that case if Galway were doing that well.

It's the not knowing that is the annoying bit.

Couldn't agree with you more. It was always a thorn in my side during my playing days that any plans for Summer holidays would be put on hold until I knew what the story was with the club.

The inability to go on Summer Holidays caused many a girlfriend to leave me (or at least I like to think that's why the left me!!!

In all seriousness though the club player really is an after thought in the GAA.

You do have a "fair idea" when games will be played.
There's a fixture calendar produced before the season starts & this has been the case at least for the past 4 or 5 seasons.
In terms of league games it isn't adhered to 100% certainly not.
But in terms of championship it is generally adhered to.
Depending on how your team does will depend when you play as well though.
If you're in the back door you'll play extra games than if you go straight through the front & replays will affect things also but you can't really legislate for that.

No you don't.
It all depends on how Galway do. If Galway lost to Mayo say, and then went on to lose the next game its guaranteed all the club championship fixtures would be brought forward. There is never any guarantee.
My idea is to have a set time allocated to county football every single year no matter how Galway do. i.e. the dates I mentioned in earlier post. Put a halt to club games during this time.
Play 2 championship games before this break (like current system) and play the rest after. Same with league. I would prefer to play more games at the start of the year. Play a game February.
It just makes it more enjoyable for the club player and at the same time doesn't effect the county team.

I disagree wholeheartedly with the above narrative. The club player enjoys almost too many perks in my opinion in their respective local parishes. Bring back the good old days where the sport were played solely for the love of the game, not for the glory of lifting the trophy.

Best wishes to Comer, Kerin & the rest of Galway this Sunday. We'll be in Croke yet folks! GaillimhAbu

What are you raving on about? Only one club in intermediate and same in senior can win a trophy so obviously the sport is still played for the love of it!
It needs to be organised a lot better and more thought put into it to make it more enjoyable to play.
Same needs to be done at inter-county. There are good footballers all over the country not playing for their county because of the commitment levels been asked to go out and get a hammering on live television.
And all because of there are too many stubborn people (who I would imagine are in and around your age) who won't accept change!

The good oul days ha!! Come out of the fog!

Disappointed in your response - unsure of what I said to receive such a hostile reaction.

Unfortunately, in this day & age club players want nothing more than to return to their parishes sticking out the sunroof, beeping the horns etc. All after winning a single league game. My vote is that we go back to our roots, and play for the love the game more so than the smell of victory.

At the same time however, the inter-county should be utilised for this level of competition. Intensify it (it's gotten too slack recently) and select your best 15 against another county's. The winners will take the spoils.

Looking forward to the match at the weekend. Great to see Eoghan Kerin getting the nod now he's back to full fitness. Gaillimh Abu!

Amongst all the helter-skelter of the past two weekends with our hurlers and footballers contesting Provincial Finals it comes as no surprise last night's draw for the next round of the Intermediate Championship appears to have gone over most of ye'r heads!! Fear not my children for NathinButSteel is with you...

Galway IFC QF:
Headford V Menlough or K/C
Oilean Arainn V Dunmore or St.Brendans
Claregalway V Oughterard or An Spideal
Oranmore V Williamstown or Glenamady

Well I wasn't the only man to fall off my stool back 'the pub last night when Menlough and K/C were drawn against eachother!! The 2nd and 3rd favourites of the Championship will be duking it out to see who progresses to the Quarter final to play Headford. You'd be a brave man to call it but K/C will fancy themselves with Shane Walsh's current form and the hiding Menlough got agin Claregaway.

Speaking of Claregalway - How happy will their management be knowing one of the only 2 possible teams who can stop them winning the cup will be knocked out before they kick a ball in the Quarters?

I imagine Gerry Fahy and his Oran charges will be looking past the relatively easy Q/F draw they received and realistically they can start preparing for a Semi Final now. The competition's dark horses continue to travel on the bridle in midfield!

Speaking of Horses... Updated Betting in Running below:
Claregalway - 4/6
K/C - 5/2
Oranmore - 5/1
Menlough - 8/1
Arainn - 11/1
Oughterard - 13/1
Others - 20/1

Intermediate Football Championship 3 00 PM Tuam Stadium Glenamaddy --- --- WILLIAMSTOWN
Local rivalry. Should be good battle. Williamstown a hardy team with Gary Kelly one of the best forwards in intermediate and to win this by 2.
Intermediate Football Relegation 3 00 PM An Fhairche ATHENRY --- --- Clifden
Flynn, Crowe etc should be too strong for Cliften.
Intermediate Football Relegation 3 00 PM The Priarie BALLINASLOE --- --- Carna Caiseal
Carna need to show up to this one to avoid potential relegation. Ballinasloe not going well all year but if they have a full outfit could give Carna a game and cause an upset.
Senior Football Championship 4 30 PM An Fhairche Naomh Anna, Leitir Móir --- --- KILCONLY TBC
Intermediate Football Championship 4 30 PM Pearse Stadium An Spidéal --- --- Oughterard DRAW
Will be an interesting battle. Oughterard have been knocking on the door for the past few years. Spideal have a good young team also. Predicting a draw.
Senior Football Championship 4 45 PM Tuam Stadium TUAM STARS--- --- Caherlistrane
Senior Football Championship 6 15 PM Pearse Stadium Killannin --- --- Moycullen DRAW
Another local battle. Amazing how these draws happen!! Moycullen stuck with Corofin for large periods against Killannin and if they have their lads home from America will cause Killannin trouble. Predicting another draw.
Senior Football Championship 6 30 PM Tuam Stadium Milltown --- --- MOUNTBELLEW/MOYLOUGH
Mountbellew not going great all year but will Daly, McHugh, Finnerty, Kenny and a few more young lads should have enough for an aging Miltown team.

Senior Football Championship 12 45 PM Pearse Stadium Mícheál Breathnach --- --- ST JAMES GAA
St James going well and I fancy them to push Corofin this year along with Salthill.
Intermediate Football Championship 1 00 PM Tuam Stadium DUNMORE MCHALES--- --- St Brendan's
Dunmore had a few lads in America all summer and have struggled since they left. If they have them back should have too much for Brendans. Brendans have a few nippy forwards tho and had two or three with Galway minors who should help them in this one.
Senior Football Championship 2 30 PM Pearse Stadium St Michael's --- --- SALTHILL
Salthill to come good this time of year and push Corofin.
Intermediate Football Championship 2 30 PM Tuam Stadium MENLOUGH --- --- Kilkerrin-Clonberne TBC
Will be another close battle. Neither team going great all year albeit Menlough playing in A league. This will stand to them and predicting a 2 point win.

I don't know about k/c menlogh. K/c will have rabbitt and ward back for this game and they have changed their keeper. And with Walsh pulling all the strings hard to see past k/c.

Williamstown v Glan looks like the tie of the round for entertainment value. A difficult game to call but I fancy the Willie's. I think K/C should take Menlough
