Portumna are the most relevant high profile example here though , their objection was late but by some means was entertained by the county board, of course they weren't the first to object but their "success" has merely encouraged others

Portumna 'encouraged' others? We've had numerous similar appeals in both hurling and football championships over the last 7 or 8 years. I'm assuming they used a crystal ball and took encouragement from future events too. Given the amount of clubs that have gone down this route, it's safe to say almost every club would do the same thing in the circumstances. I personally wouldn't appeal if it wax up to me, but to castigate Portumna as some type of catalyst for all of the appeals is complete rubbish. Aran appeal thrown out by CCC and rightly so. Willies officially back in the final where they belong. Aran surely don't have the necks to try to appeal it any further having already lowered themselves with this last appeal. diggerhitachi (Galway) - Posts: 19 - 30/10/2017 17:29:13 2059136 Link 0 |
I agree with you.... Surely Aran wont disgrace themselves any further with an additional appeal ? Has there been anything said on Menloughs yet ? AustinGleeson6 (Galway) - Posts: 223 - 30/10/2017 18:49:26 2059149 Link 0 |

Final on sat at 1 in pearse stadium seems very odd venue for a willamstown v Claregalway final one wonders why it could not be played in Tuam or corofin willamstown will prob have to leave at 10;30 in morning madness really but sure I suppose this is Galway we on about Kickitout (Galway) - Posts: 856 - 31/10/2017 08:52:48 2059211 Link 0 |

Player safety or "burn out" obviously doesn't matter to the county board and the connacht council. Asking lads to play two matches in two days on a heavy pitch is a joke. And if Claregalway win I think a couple of their minors who are on the senior team are being asked to play four matches in a week and three in three days. It's not acceptable.

Sure why don't they play on Wednesday night under lights, would certainly address any concerns about burnout. Minors shouldn't be playing this level anyway.

As much as the County Board feck up lots of things, the timing of this game is not something which can be thrown at them. The appeals process had to play out unfortunately, which left this weekend as the only option, if the winners wanted to play in Connacht. The Connacht Council could have done something, but they'll argue that they're not responsible for Galway having their house in order.

Any reason why they shouldn't be playing this level? Couldn't be played Wednesday night as Aran Islands can still appeal. And the county board still carriers some of the responsibility. Looking at Galway Gaa the first intermediate quarter finals were played on the 9th of September. For some reason Kilkerrin-Clonberne didn't play their quarter final till the 24th of September. Doesn't make sense. And left it now where it is. A shambles.

You cited Player Safety and Burnout previously and now you wonder why minors shouldn't play at senior level. The was orginially fixed for Wednesday under lights and was moved to accommodate the teams as opposed to a pending Aran appeal.

I am trying to get involved in a few conversations - is there an issue with US based contributors posting? NewYorkSham (USA) - Posts: 43 - 31/10/2017 19:40:00 2059368 Link 0 |
Player safety has nothing to do with minors. I'd be of this crazy opinion no group of players should be asked to play two games in two days. Another crazy idea is I don't believe the U21 competition should be starting at the end of October. But hey who cares about players at all. I still don't get your point about minors playing senior level. Joe Canning played senior at 16. Wayne Rooney the same for Everton. Best minor this year Evan Murphy was a standout for Salthill Seniors. And they have plenty a big enough pool to pick from. If you're good enough you're old enough.

I've been reading the comments and what's crazy is the whole Williamstown debacle is the big joke on this side of the pond - but if the other crowd do go to the DRA with this the New York County board and the Galway County board are going be embarrassed big time! It's a disgrace how the final is on in Salthill, that's more or less home advantage for Claregalway. The Willies have never played there before, some of their players have never been to Salthill full shtop.

The rumour in NY GAA circles today is if Aran go to the DRA it will create a big issue over here and the NY and Galway county boards will have a lot of explaining to do NewYorkSham (USA) - Posts: 43 - 31/10/2017 20:03:03 2059377 Link 0 |
