Yes I was at the match as a neutral to watch a great game. I disagree that Walsh needed help from the ref. He often gave advantage. We'll agree to disagree. As for the umpire. I saw one wave it wide twice. Maybe I missed the other one calling a point.

Is there an hearing or what is the update on the Aran Islands objection? The Connacht quarter final involving the galway winner is due to be played Sunday 5th November which would mean the county final has to be played this weekend to get a winner. gaaman11 (Galway) - Posts: 107 - 24/10/2017 08:02:24 2057423 Link 0 |

I see that CG and Aran both in u21 action this weekend. No chance of final being played. Disgrace. MapleSyrup (Galway) - Posts: 165 - 24/10/2017 11:11:59 2057476 Link 0 |
Do Aran have an U-21 team, has it being confirmed it is Aran v Claregalway in the Intermediate Final? Surley Aran should be made play some of their league games this weekend if not playing final, seem to be the only county in Ireland with league games still to play going into November gaaman11 (Galway) - Posts: 107 - 24/10/2017 11:30:32 2057485 Link 0 |
With these nonsensical technical objections, surely there is a case for creating a rule that allows a player to play for his native club at any time regardless of his overseas activity. If a player registers for a club at the start of a year, he should be free to play for them no matter what. What has playing a match in New York got to do with a Galway intermediate c'ship??

A complete and utter disgrace that aran are in the final. I have a lot of respect for aran, the fact that they are competing at this level is remarkable and credit to them. However, this bs of appealing a match over a lad that didn't even start for williamstown is a joke, a very very low blow from aran. They bet them fair and square, rules are rules but who honestly cares whether the lad played in the us this summer? Hope cg hammer them in the final tribesman123 (Galway) - Posts: 36 - 24/10/2017 15:39:46 2057567 Link 0 |
Without doubt, the rules need revising. Players going abroad for the summer should be encouraged to play football/hurling and not be caught in an administrative quagmire. In the past, teams who have objected have found it very difficult to find concrete proof of suspected breaches as players real names are rarely used in any official capacity while abroad. In the era of social media and high quality digital cameras, this has changed and now a breach in the rules has a much greater chance of being found out. This is a sorry state of affairs for all concerned and the blame lies squarely at the door of the administrators. In the particular case in question, if a rule has been breached, there are clear procedures to be followed but unless this addressed, cases like this are just going to become more common.

Fully agree, great admiration for Aran being so competitive but there is no honor in getting through this way.... decision like this are so shortsighted and will haunt a club for a generation..... interesting that most see this an injustice whereas there was v little sympathy for Turloughmore whose player hadnt even been in the US......

Must agree a pure joke if willamstown are thrown out of championship they a small club trying there best and for Aran to object after getting beaten on the field of play is absolutely disgraceful they should hang there heads in shame if I was from willamstown I would hold a massive protest the day of final ( I know not fair on Claregalway) but they can not just take this lying down again must say shame on Aran Kickitout (Galway) - Posts: 856 - 24/10/2017 16:40:00 2057590 Link 1 |
This is a disgrace. Anybody who has watched the Intermediate this year knows that Williamstown are head & shoulders above any team at this grade, and for the Islanders to put in a complaint goes against everything the GAA stands for. I think this will haunt them in years to come - there's no honour in what they've done.

Assuming that they have won the appeal (which I haven't seen any official confirmation of apart from on this forum ... and as an aside, says a lot, in my opinion, about how poorly the county board is run), why is it shame on Aran? They didn't have any illegal players. I don't agree with the rule but what's the point in having rules if it's OK to breach ones that people feel are unfair when they are, as they should be, applied without fear or favour. What would you have advised Aran to do having found out that Williamstown broke the rules (if that is actually the case)? Ignore the fact? I'm sure they weren't over the moon about appealing in these circumstances (it's terrible, if true, for the player involved) but I wouldn't blame them for doing it either. The obvious solution is to change the rules.

Anybody who has watched the Intermediate this year knows that Williamstown are head & shoulders above any team at this grade You're great craic altogether scantermediate :-) What absolute rubbish. They've done very well to get to a final but to say they're head & shoulders above everyone else in intermediate shows what you know about football. They lost their first round game and scraped through the rest of their c'ship games. Claregalway will beat them if indeed they do get to play in the final. galwayman2 (Galway) - Posts: 1248 - 24/10/2017 17:31:51 2057614 Link 0 |

I haven't a clue what the result of the appeal is but people are delusional if they think their own club wouldn't also appeal a result if they found out the opposition fielded an illegal player. Especially in such a tight game that was decided by the last kick of the match in extra-time after a replay. The rules cannot be an a la carte menu where you pick some rules to enforce and not bother with others. Marooned (Galway) - Posts: 2225 - 24/10/2017 17:53:46 2057627 Link 0 |
