Intermediate Football Championship 2017

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The following is taken directly from the GAA rule book for 2017;

Playing Membership Requirements
(a) A player must be a registered Full Member or Youth
Member of a Club and the Association.
(b) A player may not be a member of a Club for which
he is ineligible to play.
(c) Infractions and Penalties:
(i) Competing for a Club for which one is
ineligible to play within the County of one's
Own Club:
Player - 12 weeks Suspension;
Club Chairperson and Secretary - 12 weeks
suspension;
Team -
(1) On a proven Objection - Award of Game
to the Opposing Team,
(2) On an Inquiry by the Committee-inCharge
- Forfeiture of Game without
Award of Game to the Opposing Team, or
Fine, depending on the circumstances.
(ii) Competing for a Club for which one is
ineligible to play outside the County of one's
Own Club:
Player - 48 weeks suspension;
Club Chairperson and Secretary - 48 weeks
suspension;
Team: as above

In the Aran Islands/Williamstown case, only section (ii) applies as the Williamstown player only played illegally for a club outside of his County which is then New York. Therefore, the punishment lies with the New York club, it's chairperson, secretary and the Williamstown player. Williamstown should not be thrown out because during the semi-final, that player was fully registered player with them and he never requested a transfer to New York. It's the same as going on holidays to London and togging out for a game! it's your own fault and the club you tog out for should've inquired about your own eligibility.

The Galway GAA have misinterpreted the rules.

Supppsedly the New York county board did do their own investigation and found there was no evidence that the lad played for a club out there.

Replying To Fan Down Under:  "Thanks for the update. Then why is that an issue for Williamstown as the player is legal for the club? - that's an issue for the individual and the club in America if there's no sanction.

Aran Islands can't play the final if the objection is upheld - similar issues previously have confirmed same.

The hurling issue is different with group stages and points involved!!! Taughts???"
Honestly, I'm not sure if there has been an incident like this where a potentially unsanctioned player played GAA in the US, apart from maybe Tony Keady (RIP) but I would presume rules and regulations may have moved on somewhat since that incident. I would agree with your viewpoint that the player most likely was legal to play for Williamstown ( if the information I have heard is correct) and as such the punishment should be against the US team or the player himself. Would be interested to hear if any other teams have encountered anything like this. It definitely sets a low standard for kicking teams out of competitions if what I have heard is in any way true. I have no dog in this fight myself but I am concerned that if this ruling holds up then the burden of proof of wrongdoing lies a long way south of names on official GAA paperwork between clubs and GAA HQ and somewhere closer to scanning social media to find something to throw a county final into chaos. Not a good situation.

Reports are that the club is basing its proof on still photos of the player in a game in Gaelic Park. Iffy proposition as any person's head can be super imposed on any other persons body. Video evidence would be more concrete proof.

Claregalway 3-12 Kilkerrin/Clonberne 2-13 AET

Two amazing intermediate semi-finals this year with both games going to replays and both replays going to extra time.

was a neutral attending Tuam stadium today, and have to say it was a pleasure to watch Shane Walsh play. He contributed 2-8 in total and you could feel the buzz of excitement whenever he got the ball.
Claregalway eked out the win barely - as a result of having a better spread of scorers throughout the team and stronger bench.
the game was a credit to both teams played in dreadful conditions.

re Williamstown my understanding is that the player has admitted to playing in the U.S. so what the outcome is after that who knows?

power balanced forward line and bench did it for CG....if clonbern had one more forward they would have won. Ref didnt give much protection to walsh who had two and at times three marking him...felt he let a lot go. a lot of confusion toward end of normal time when umpires flagged a point for clonbern only for ref to run in have a discussion and over rule their decdision!! controversy again but all in all a great game

Also hearing from a few people over this Aran/Williamstown situation that Aran would not be able to play the final even if they win the objection? Can anybody shed light on this? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, one would find it hard to see why they would object if it wasn't to get a place back in the championship? I understand that rules are rules and their right to object is the same as everybody else's but just curious if they can actually play the final and if not why?

Protection to Walsh?! The ref isn't a bouncer in Coppers. He let the game be played which is proper order. The umpires signalled for a wide not a point so no controversy. Claregalway just pushed that bit harder in the end

Congratulations to Claregalway. The 4/6 offered by Bookmakers about them to win it outright before the quarter finals looks like the bet of the century now.

No offence to Aran/Williamstown but the real final was won Saturday. Neither team has a chance of stopping this CG side who will be more than comfortable in Senior next year.

What a great championship this has been though - while the overall standard of teams in the competition has no doubt deteriorated the standard of games was superb as evidenced by the both sets of semi finals.

Interesting that you feel "clout" or "pedigree" dictate which teams rules should be applied to. Is this an insight into how the county board operates?

Comiserations to Clonberne and hearty congratulations to Claregalway.

2 great games of football and I thoroughly enjoyed them both. No dirty strokes or cheapshots just 2 teams playing hard and fair football.

I would question as to how Shane Walsh and his man marker were left so open and exposed for the first goal early on ? A huge amount of space for Walsh to win the ball and as soon as he decided he was going to score a goal, nothing was going to prevent him.

Then the umpires waving a free that looked over the bar to be wide, before the referee then giving KC another chance to level and force extra time !

Claregalway were the better team over the 2 days but that Shane Walsh is a fine footballer.

Are you seriously implying that Aran have photoshopped this individuals head onto a nother body in a bid to deceive the county board ?

You wouldnt be from Williamstown by any chance ?

were you at the game? one umpire signalled a score and other signalled nothing....ref went in and clonbern players seemed irate... that is what happened.. i didnt have the best view of that particular shot but how and ever it was ultimately not awarded. as for walsh he was being constantly held off the ball and though that is to be expected at this level it is up to the ref to intervene. CG won because of their subs and greater spread of scorers in the forwards as well as thier physical power. both teams pushed as hard as they could.

Wasn't at the game myself but heard from Galway Bay FM that Walsh was fantastic, were his scores as difficult as the commentators made them out be?

Heard the Moran brothers from Claregalway excelled once more, in particular Sean Moran who was named man of the match. Expected more from Rabbitte but sure they'll come again.

Any update on the appeal?
