The qualifiers have killed the early rounds in my opinion. If Galway v Mayo happens this June it will be the most eagerly awaited game between the two in years....that should not be.

The championship needs a rethink. Bigger games earlier and more often.

Can't wait to hear the Sunday game theme tune on the telly come the 21 May.

And I'm really looking forward to our first outing against Limerick or Clare on 11 June.

Greatest two games in the world and we have them all to ourselves, count your blessings people!"
2017 will be a great Munster Championships. Kerry hot favourites but up against 3 Division 2 teams.

I hope so, 3 2016 Q-finalists and Cork in the mix as well. Waterford are really the only odd one out.

Limerick have had a few decent U-21 teams in the last couple of years.

Clare will always give you a battle, especially if Kerry are coming up against them in Ennis.

Tipperary are looking to establish themselves as the second team in the province and you feel they will win a Munster title in the next couple of years if they keep improving.

Cork, as ever remain the great Enigma. A betting man would put his money on Tipp getting over them in the semi-final, but with the new PUC being opened you just know Cork will be mad to win the first ever Munster final played there.

Most people on the outside looking in scoff at the Munster football championship. But in their own backyard Limerick, Clare and Tipp can give anyone a game - as many a team in the qualifiers has found to their cost in recent years!

Just a pity our first outing isn't until 11 June.

Too right and so you should, everyone is interested in their own county and for them that's when champo starts , however there is a snobbish element that believe the year begins and ends with Top four-eight teams , if you listened to them someone like yourself would never get out of bed.
Best of luck

The problem in this country isn't the whinging. It's that things don't change for too long when they are broken.

Well said, I couldn't agree more, actually some of the games in August are dreadful too. Pat Spillane started this bs and lot of sheep followed unfortunately. Enjoy it, your county may only get two games but for those two days where else in the world would you want to be???

I am afraid that the munster championship has really gone backwards since the demise of Cork. I enjoyed the 2015 final (1st game) that ended in a draw. Tipp caught Cork nicely last year, it will be interesting to see how that pans out this year. Kerry going to Ennis will have only one winner though. A final in Pairc ui Caoimh v Cork would be a good return to some sort of parity. Unless this happens, there will continue to be miss match galore. Its hard to criticise kerry as they are in with a selection of teams that are well beneath them in terms of ability and division. If they go out and hammer their opposition it is not exactly their own fault. For the neutral though, it is at the stage where you simply dont even tune into a fixture that doesnt involve cork v kerry.

I feel that leinster offers a bit of hope in a challenge to dublin, in the form of Meath. They have been working well in division 2 and got caught by a bad start. I think that their absence in the division 2 final will stand to them well as they are now going to focus on winning leinster big time to vindicate their progress. Kildare likewise have improved but I think the real challenge to dublin comes from their meath rivals.

Connaught is not a foregone conclusion. Galway are the stand out team that probably will get one up on Mayo again. I think they could have a great shout of getting a run going beyond their province too. Ross look like a beaten docket but you never know with them either.

Ulster will be the usual dog fight. There are 3 teams that can win it that you could not separate on a given day. Shocks beyond these teams could include Cavan beating monaghan or the winner of that game getting beaten by either down or armagh in the following game. If Cavan, Down or Armagh got through to the final, you would have to say that Cavan or Armagh would be the only ones with any chance. Down look like derry in their demise. The quality of the teams might not be up their with the first division sides, but the level of competition is even and the form can go out the window for a match that seems to be a mismatch. Whether these games could be deemed to be watchable is another story. I think that it is difficult to be impressed by some of the matches and the skills on display.

Honestly, this thread has merit. There will be close games between teams of lower division standings but when they get to play the bigger sides, they will not stand much of a chance. The provincial semis or finals when the teams of a similar standard meet (Donegal v Tyrone, Galway v Mayo, Meath v Dublin potentially, Tipp v Cork) are potential semis where it begins to get interesting. Even then, you would hope that the teams closer in divisions would meet up to give us a good match.

Cheers Damo. Yes in and around the May bank holiday I get the usual goose bumps knowing the Championship for the Wee County is just around the corner.

So do you not think there is merit in more frequent games, teams playing week in week out, rather than training training training and the rest of us wait ages to see them play and go to a club match without the county players?
The club scene only really gets going in August or September and then there are matches galore to run off the championships. That is wrong too.

Plenty of good club football & hurling to be played over the next few months & while there will be some unavoidable mismatches in the early stages of the championship there will also be a lot of games between well matched teams.

Looking forward to it all.

Exactly right. Even if your team isn't a realistic AI contender. there's always the satisfaction of beating the neighbouring county (or going to see them getting beat by someone else). No Summer is complete without a traffic jam in Clones!

I would be bored if I knew my team were going to be nowhere come August. But the fact that there is a strong chance my team are going to be there make up for the shitty matches in between. Because once the QFs arrive, all thoughts of the league and it's much better format, go out the window.

I wouldnt knock the league at all. It is the fairest and most level competition that we have. There are great, close games in it, with upsets and last day drama. The championship sorely lacks this. Perhaps the league is a template that the championship will eventually adopt. I for one would be up for it.
