It's our turn next year, I'm already on the hunt for brown trousers in Penney's

There seems to be a lot of media hype about Nee York running Sligo close or even turning them over this Sunday. Don't know where it comes from, but I've a feeling it will prove counter-productive for them in the end, they need Sligo to be complacent like Ros were last year.

Think people look at the Roscommon game last year and seem to think New York have it in them to pip Sligo but honestly cant see it.

It would be great for the GAA if New York could somehow pull of a shock but lets be honest, the New York team is made up of men from all over Ireland who cant get playing with their own respective counties but maybe in a shoot out they could just nick it.

New York are undoubtedly MASSIVE underdogs but stranger things have happened.

NY had inter-county standard players last year, just to correct the record

I listened to the GAA Hour podcast and couldn't agree more with Parkinson. This game should be televised or at least streamed. Get some camera's out there, interview fans, ex-pats. Have a show sat night from a bar in New York with a discussion panel on the year ahead etc.

Get some interest going. It is after all the curtain raiser to the Championship.

I'm looking to get out to Gaelic Park when Mayo play there again in a couple of years, never been there before. I imagine the weekend is worth the trip?!?

Daniel McKenna is playing with New York and if he was at home, he would be playing with Monaghan.

Excellent point. The GAA has been wasting time, effort and a whole pile of cash 'promoting' Gaelic games all over the world from Hong Kong to Timbuktu but NY and London have been to the forefront of immigration for the past 100 years. NY hosted the All Ireland and London were in a few finals (albeit back in the early 1900's and with different representation rules).
I can only imagine the stories auld fellas's would have from playing in Gaelic Park in the 60's for example. I was talking with an older gent from Tyrone once in a pub that played in the ulster championship god knows when. The following year most of the Tyrone team he lined out with that day had now immigrated and he was playing alongside them in Gaelic Park. God, I'm sure you could write books on stories coming out of cities like NY, Boston, London etc.....

I think the element of surprise is lost at this stage. If they do beat Sligo it will be down to them been better prepared.

Hard luck to NY.... led by a point at one stage in the second half but Sligo pushed on and you got the feeling they always had that extra gear. Sligo now play Mayo in 2 weeks time me.

Irish TV did the same from London the night before London v Mayo unfortunately they have gone to the wall. The London game as well would be good TV

Any money that the GAA spends on overseas promotion is really a drop in the ocean: the vast amount of money needed to sustain gaelic games abroad comes from club members' pockets and local sponsors. In fact, you could argue that HQ is a source of unnecessary expense for clubs a lot of the time...

Hard luck to NY, seems like they ran out of steam in the final quarter.

The media spent the whole week fawning over New York, probably a lot to do with how close they came to turning over Roscommon last year that raised their profile to a degree but I thought it put an awful lot of pressure on them this time round as a result and played into Sligo's hands a bit.

Ya agree with that
Also thought carew did a good job talking up the opposition 'if new York beat us it won't be an ambush ' etc much cuter than the ny manager o halloran felt he got sucked in and started to buy into the hype

Have to agree with the above comments, last year's narrow loss to Roscommon meant Sligo were leaving nothing to chance. The focus was on New York.
One factor which didn't help New York, was the lack of competitive games prior to Sunday's game, Sligo had played 7 league games, which is a huge factor. Should New York play London and the winners play in the Connact championship?. The losers enter the qualifiers.

just a quick question on this. I noticed Mark Breheny was playing for Sligo. How many championships has he played in. Is he currently the longest-serving inter-county player ?

That was his fourth time playing against New York, the first in 2002 and scored in every game. I think he is the longest serving intercounty player at the moment
