Sunday Game pundit Ciaran Whelan has defended himself against claims he went 'soft' on Dublin in his analysis of last Sunday's ill-tempered All-Ireland SFC semi-final.

Having been outspoken in his criticism of Tyrone in recent weeks, many armchair viewers felt Whelan's take on what transpired on the Croke Park pitch between Dublin and Mayo lacked consistency.

"People see what they want to see and hear what they want to hear," he told Newstalk's 'Off The Ball' show.

"We are there to be objective and RTE put structures in place to look at those scenarios.

"I was critical of Dublin the other night and I have come under fire from some Dublin supporters who felt I didn't defend them enough.

"Then we have the other end of the scale where people felt I went soft on them."
