Goold: we're trying to be self-critical

Fintan Goold and his Cork team-mates are 'too long in the tooth' to be getting carried away with their unbeaten start to their Division 1 campaign.

Brian Cuthbert's charges have claimed the scalps of Dublin and Monaghan in their opening two games but, speaking to The Examiner, midfielder Gould sounded a note of caution: "Obviously, it's a very positive start.

"Going into the break, it was good to be looking up rather than looking down, but I think we're too long in the tooth now to be reading too much into things.

"Both of the wins were close and they could have gone either way, but I think what's important this year is that we're learning from every game. We've looked at the two matches and there are things to improve on, we're trying to be self-critical.

"Last year, we were winning but maybe not learning enough and then in the summer when things went against us we didn't have all the answers."

Goold said the return of Ronan McCarthy to Cuthbert's backroom team is a big plus.

"We're all glad to have him back.

"He was very good as a selector and coach last year and I'm sure he'll slot right back in.

"As a team, we'll just keep our heads down and focus on playing and the management will take care of itself."
