Kennedy plays down gender-role

The Cork footballers stand for the national anthem.

New Cork vice-chairperson Tracey Kennedy has stressed that she never felt any issue being a woman in GAA administration.

The former Cork PRO was elected as vice-chairperson at last weekend's convention and she told the Southern Star that she is looking forward to the new role.

"I honestly can't remember any point in my career that there was an impediment because I was a woman. Clearly, it was not a factor in this election even though some people thought it might be," said Kennedy.

"I'm sure there were some who had concerns about a woman being elected to the role. I have no doubts about that. Yet there was nothing put in my way to prevent me from gaining the vice-chairmanship and I would argue being elected to PRO was actually a bigger step, as I became the first female officer at that point.

"It doesn't matter whether you are a man or a woman as long as you are willing to work. I think that attitude is the way Cork GAA is going where hard work is respected and acknowledged."
