Leinster club IFC: rare success for a Kilkenny football team

Railyard (Kilkenny) 2-8
Aughrim (Wicklow) 1-7

Kilkenny football received a much-needed shot in the arm yesterday when Railyard scored a shock win over Aughrim at Freshford.

Despite being the Kilkenny senior champions, Railyard weren't expect to trouble the Wicklow intermediate kingpins and things looked to be going according to script when the visitors opened up a 1-2 to 0-0 lead inside the first five minutes.

However, Railyard hit back brilliantly with two goals from Paul Donnelly giving them into a 2-3 to 1-5 lead at half-time.

A Derek Kavanagh point restored parity for Aughrim on the restart, but Railyard weren't to be denied a famous victory as points from Philip Roche, Sean Brennan and Caleb Brennan saw them home.

Meanwhile, St. Martin's and Danesfort advanced to the semi-final and quarter-final respectively of the Kilkenny SHC yesterday.

Muckalee outfit St. Martin's, who are managed by Charlie Carter, registered a 2-16 to 2-13 quarter-final win over Dicksboro, while the Hogan brothers, Richie and Paddy, were to the fore as Danesfort set up a quarter-final joust with Ballyhale Shamrocks after defeating Tullaroan 1-13 to 0-11 in their replayed first round / relegation semi-final.
