Phil Shanahan, who played hurling with both his native Tipperary and Dublin has passed away.

Tipperary county board issued a statement on the Toomevara native today:

"It is with regret that Tipperary County Board has learned of the death of former Tipperary, Dublin and Toomevara hurler, Phil Shanahan. Phil played minor hurling with Tipperary in 1946 and won All Ireland and Munster senior hurling medals with Tipperary in the three in a row victories of 1949, 50 and 51.

"He also played senior hurling with Dublin in 1954 and 55. He won four National Hurling League medals in 1949, 1950, 1952 and 1957 and four Railway Cup medals in 1950, 1951, 1952 and 1953. He won a county senior hurling medal in 1960 with Toomevara and will be remembered as one of hurling's finest midfielders.

"He also had an involvement with Portlaoise GAA club and Laois GAA over the years and also Killenaule GAA club in the 1980s. Tipperary County Board extends its deepest to his wife Joan and his sons, Philip, Brian and David and all his family and friends."

Funeral arrangements are as follows: Removal from O'Donoghue's Funeral Home, Kickham Street, Clonmel, at 7.30pm to Ss. Peter & Paul's Church on Tuesday evening. Requiem Mass at 1pm on Wednesday with burial immediately afterwards in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Tweet
