Ulster uni's receive just four complaints over GAA tops

November 27, 2014

GAA jerseys are a common sight around universities.

Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) leader Jim Allister's claim that the wearing of GAA jerseys in the North's universities causes offence to unionists appears to be well wide of the mark.

Allister caused uproar earlier this year when he called for a ban on the wearing of GAA tops at Ulster University (UU). He claimed that it was "creating a substantial chill factor" and "intimidating atmosphere" for Protestant students.

However, figures obtained by the Irish News show that the two universities north of the border have received only four complaints over the issue in the past five years.

Three of the complaints were made to Ulster University, while Queen's University received the other complaint.

GAA jerseys are becoming a more common sight at Ulster University and Queen's University where Catholic students outnumber their Protestant counterparts.
