Lucan Sarsfields club notes

June 17, 2019

What a weekend for Dublin Hurling, a wonderful victory in Parnell Park, and our own Chris Crummey to the fore. A great leader and great ambassador for the club as well. Dublin Senior Camogie also opened the Championship season with a win, and great to see the Lucan girls playing at after time and the Lucan ladies on the Dublin Squad were delighted to chat to them after. We also had our newest Leinster Champion with Aoibheann Stokes winning the Leinster Regional Féile Skills competition. There was some disappointment with the Dublin minor hurlers unfortunately losing out to Wexford, they battled bravely until the end but it wasn’t to be, but well done to Charlie Keher, Colm Walsh and Evin Dowling who represented the club so well. We also had Cian Canavan part of the Dublin Plunkett team that beat Kilkenny in the Qtr Final of the Celtic Challenge, and well done also 3 Lucan girls Leah O’Byrne, Siobhan Bernie and Rebecca McGrath who were with the Dublin ladies football u13 development squad in Portlaoise.

Senior hurlers lost out to Kilmacud Crokes in league, Jnr B hurlers are flying high at the top of league and Championship after two big wins this week. Jnr Ladies footballers lost out in Championship midweek, with the Inter Ladies picking up another win in the Cup, they are unbeaten in that competition. The Jnr A hurlers play this Tuesday night away to Ballyboden, the Senior Footballers are back in action Wednesday night at home to NaFianna, a big clash in the race for a semi-final spot, so big support welcome, 7.30pm.

Report from U10 Camogie HT game

A group of girls from our Under 10 Camogie team had the honour of playing in the half time mini game on Saturday at the Dublin Senior Camogie’s All Ireland Championship Match v Meath. The girls were great ambassadors for the club, and put in a great performance against O’Dwyers with some great skills on display.

Afterwards the girls were delighted to get the chance to pose for a photo and a chat with Ali Twomey, Orla Beagan and Emma Flanagan who are fantastic role models for our juvenile players in the club, and the U10 girls are looking forward to welcoming them to one of our training sessions over the coming weeks.

Lucan Sarsfields V St Vincent's U8 Camogie
Our U8 girls played Camogie at home to St Vincent's on Sunday morning. This was our last Camogie match before the summer break. Both mentors and parents were very proud of how much the girls have improved and grown as a team over the last few short months.

Lucan U11 Camogie and Ladies Football

They left a misty lucan on saturday morning and headed to the sunny south east. Lucan U11 camogie and Ladies Football was greatly welcome to Marshalstown Castledockrell GAA on Saturday morning for both camogie and football games. We played one team from. Marshalstown while Duffry Rovers played their  2 teams and then they played 2 football games against Baile Dubh Tire after which we had some light refreshments in the clubhouse. In all 80 girls took part and it was an enjoyable afternoon. The camogie and football matches were end to end drama., great skills on show and fantastic team work displayed. After the matches we headed to pirates cove, in Courttown for further fun and team bonding. Great memories were made and a return visit has been promised by our Wexford friends.

Adult Hurling Report

A mixed week for our adult hurlers.  As usual, it was the Junior B’s who provided the success with good wins in Championship over St Brigids mid-week (report below) and then a comprehensive league win over St Sylvesters on Sunday.  The Junior A’s were unlucky to lose lost out by a single point to Realt Dearg in a mid-week championship clash on a scoreline of 0-19 to 2-14.  However, they remain in with a shout of a quarter-final place with one group game to play.  The seniors went down by 8 points to Kilmacud Crokes in a Sunday morning league game (report below).  Congrats to Chris Crummey on captaining Dublin to great win over Galway and securing a place in the All-Ireland series.  Commiserations to our three Dublin minors, Colm Walsh, Charlie Keher and Evin Dowling, as Dublin bow out of the Championship after Leinster semi-final loss to Wexford.

AHL1:  Kilmacud Crokes 3-16 Lucan Sarsfields 1-14

Lucan’s poor run in the league continued with this 8 point loss to Kilmacud Crokes.  The damage was done in the opening half when Crokes got 3 goals and lead 3-8 to 1-4 at half time.  Lucan’s goal was scored by Anto McNulty who finished well from close range.  Lucan put in a spirited second half performance and had reduced the deficit to 5 points with 15 minutes to play.  However, Crokes finished strong and were comfortable winners in the end.  Lucan relied on the accurate free taking of Donal Flannery and Seanie McClelland for most of their scores, as the forward line struggled to find space and cohesion against a good Crokes backline.  Minor player, Matt Dunne, made his competitive adult debut when introduced at half-time and showed reasonably well, making some good runs and picking off a nice score.  Overall, Lucan will be somewhat disappointed with this showing but can take some positives from the second half performance.

Lucan Team/Scorers: C Murray, P Smith, P Rigney, P Claffey, P Kelly, M McCaffrey, S McClelland (0-4f), J McCaffrey, R Smith, R Ward (0-1), K Fitzgerald (0-2), E O’Conghaile, C McHugh (0-1), A McNulty (1-0), D Flannery (0-5, 0-4f).  Subs introduced: M Dunne (0-1), J Bellew.

JDHC:  Lucan Sarsfields 6-9  St Brigids 2-12.

Lucan Junior B’s continued their good run of form with a comprehensive championship win over St Brigids.  Lucan have now secured a quarter-final place and remain on course to top the group.  Lucan hadn’t been scoring that many goals lately but found the net six times on this occasion.  They will be somewhat disappointed however to only notch 2 points from play over the hour.  The opening exchanges were very competitive but an early goal from Aidan Glover helped Lucan to settle but Brigids responded well and remained very much in contention.  Two goals from Evan Lombard helped Lucan to a somewhat flattering 3 point lead at half-time, 3-3 to 1-6.  In the second half, Lucan upped the ante and soon began to dominate.  Two goals in quick succession from Killian Boylan and another from Alan Murphy effectively finished the game as a contest.  Brigids battled on and got a late consolation goal but Lucan were comfortable nine point winners in the end.  Dylan Kelly gave a man of the match performance at centre back while Killian Boylan and Evan Lombard were most dangerous up front.

Lucan Team/Scorers: L Finnerty, S Stapleton, J Cavanagh, S Farrell, J O’Connor, D Kelly, I Fitzgerald, L Murphy, D Ryan, D Reid, K Boylan (2-1), C Keane (0-7f), A Glover (1-0), E Lombard (2-0), A Murphy (1-1). Subs introduced: R Ennis, S Keegan, E Gately, M O’Malley.
