Senior Men

It was a busy week-end for a severely depleted senior men's team with an away game against Clan na Gael on Friday night followed up by a home tie against Derrynoose on Sunday afternoon.

Any trip to Lurgan can be tricky at the best of times never mind with an understrength side and the Shanes, despite a determined performance, lost out by twelve points to Clan na Gael on Friday. The Shanes found themselves 1 - 2 in arrears early on before a point from Sean McLoughlin opened their account. A third point for the home side was cancelled out by a pointed free from Paul O'Rourke and the teams then swapped points with O'Rourke on target again for the Shanes. The Clans had the better of the remainder of the first-half as they tagged on another four answered points to lead by eight at the break, 1 - 8 to 0 - 3.

The Shanes made the better start to the second half, registering an early point when corner back Michael McParland powered forward to slot the ball over the bar from a tight angle and this was quickly followed up by another Paul O'Rourke free. Clan na Gael replied with the first point of the second-half before two points in a row from Ryan Quinn got the Shanes back to within five but their hopes of a comeback were all but dashed minutes later when the home side fired home the second goal of the contest. A good point from Oisín O'Callaghan kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Shanes but the Clans hit the next three points with Mark McCabe responding for the Shanes. The home side led by nine at this stage and in the dying seconds of the game their added a third goal to claim the win on a score-line of 3 - 12 to 0 - 9.

Derrynoose were the visitors to Camlough on Sunday afternoon and they returned home with the win, defeating the Shanes by five points, 2 - 9 to 1 - 7.

Derrynoose opened the scoring with an early point which was quickly cancelled out by a well taken score from Paul O'Rourke. Derrynoose got the next two points with Sean McLoughlin replying for the Shanes to leave his side one behind before the away team fired over the next three points to give them a four point advantage. A Mark McCabe point reduced the deficit to three but with the last attack of the opening half Derrynoose netted their first goal of the game to give them a six point lead at the break.

The Shanes got a good start to the second-half with two Paul O'Rourke points with Derrynoose replying with their seventh of the contest. The game then went through a spell of about fifteen minutes with both defences on top and neither side registering a single score. However the Shanes then sprang to life with Paul O'Rourke pointing from a free before a high ball was met by Mark McCabe who fisted it to the net and leave just one between the sides. Soon after a brilliant long range point from Conal O'Brien had the Shanes back on level terms and at that stage in the game they looked like going on to win the game but Derrynoose dug deep and scored a further 1 - 2 without reply to claim the all-important win.

Despite these two defeats the Shanes lads who played in both games deserve great credit for their efforts and never say die attitude, something which serve them well in their final two league games of the year.

On Tuesday night our U8s visited Carrickcruppen and a great game of football was played and full credit must go to both teams for the effort and skills displayed by both teams on what was a very warm evening. The U8s were back on the road again on Wednesday night, this time travelling to Dromintee. Once again the young Shanes squad put in a very good display of footballing ability which was enjoyed by management, parents and all kids involved and the management would like to thank all parents and players for their continued participation. U8 training continues every Tuesday and Friday evening at 6.00pm at the field and all new players are welcome.

Well done to the U8 & U10 camogs who had another very successful blitz on Saturday morning in Crossmaglen with both teams unbeaten and the U10's winning all their games. Player Injury Fund

The club is holding a night on Friday 5th August to raise some funds to help with the Player Injury Fund.  A number of players, both men and ladies, have suffered injuries over the past number of months and we are encouraging everyone to come along on the night to contribute to the injury fund.

Condolences

Everyone at the club would like to offer their sympathy to the family of Terry Garvey who died recently. Terry was the grandfather of our former underage players Gavin and Alan Kane. Sympathies also to the family of Tony Mulholland who passed away last week. Tony was the nephew of our U16 ladies team mentor Celine Shields and brother to Forkhill and Armagh senior ladies player Amy Mulholland. May they both rest in peace.
