East Down U-16A Championship - Round 2

Aughlisnafin 4-16 Castlewellan 2-10

Aughlisnafin got back to winning ways, after last weeks reversal against Liatroim, with a comprehensive victory at home to Kilmegan parish neighbours Castlewellan. Both teams needed their first win to keep alive their aspirations to make the semi-finals and this gave the contest a slight edge. Oran Flanagan opened the scoring for the 'Fin with his first of nine points over the hour which included seven frees, one from play and a monstrous '45 which sailed high and centre over the black spot. Shea Croskery, who missed the Liatroim game through injury, grabbed his first of four majors moments later after taking a superb ball from Eoin Lundy to tee up Aaron Flanagan. Flanagan's effort was well saved by 'Town keeper Caolan Watson but Croskery buried the re-bound. Castlewellan grabbed a fortunate goal back when a '45 sent in by Daire McVeigh eluded everyone and flew into the roof of the net. Aaron Flanagan had the ball in the 'Town net in the very next attack but it was disallowed by match official Oliver Burke. The younger Flanagan brother then saw another strong effort beat away as the 'Fin sought to build on their ascendancy. Croskery plundered two more goals and a point. Oran Flanagan stroked over four frees with the 'Town replying with 0-6 before the short whistle. Half time Aughlisnafin 3-06 Castlewellan 1-06.

Castlewellan began the second half with a greater sense of purpose winning the throw in to engineer a well worked point. They followed up with another in the next attack to reduce the deficit to just four points. The 'Fin re-gained the momentum and reeled over seven points in a dominant fifteen minute spell with Croskery 0-3, O Flanagan (0-2) and Lundy and Robb grabbing a point apiece. Both teams added 1-3 to their tallies before the long whistle, Croskery grabbing his fourth major, Robb with his second minor and the irrepressible Flanagan with another brace of points. Castlewellan had some decent goal chances in the closing stages but the defence stood strong. Haynes was a standout for the 'Fin defence with C Matthews, O Flanagan, Lundy and Croskery winning their individual battles. For the 'Town their keeper Watson was key with impressive showings from McVeigh, McKibbin, O'Toole and McCabe. Final score Aughlisnafin 4-16 Castlewellan 2-10.
