Division 2 pacesetters Down will travel to Mullingar this weekend and Mark Poland hopes they can take another step towards promotion.

Jim McCorry's men have six points from a possible eight to their name and a win on the road against the Lake County would set them up nicely with home games against Meath and Laois to follow.

"Just because we're sitting at the top of the table now we're not going in thinking we have a divine right to win," Poland remarked to The Irish News.

"All the games are tight and we scraped through a couple being brutally honest. It's a very tight division."

Poland admits the Mourne County have rode their luck at times so far.

"To be successful every team needs a bit of luck but the boys have battled hard.

"We were six points down against Galway but we didn't throw the towel in and the same against Kildare as well.

"Even in Cavan, conditions were brutal and the boys dug it out in the second half against a strong breeze.

"You need a bit of luck along the way but a lot of that is down to hard work and the will to win as well."
