Benny not for turning

Down's Benny Coulter. INPHO

Benny Coulter is happy with his decision to call time on his inter-county career.

In an interview with the Belfast Telegraph, the Mayobridge clubman stressed there would be no going back on his decision to quit the Down team after 14 seasons.

"It just wasn't that appealing to me. I wasn't looking forward to it," he said of the prospect of returning to pre-season training.

"I had it in my mind that I wasn't going back so my decision was made for me."

"There definitely wouldn't (be a chance of a return). I made the decision and I am sticking with it. First of all, it wouldn't be fair on the lads who are there, and I don't know if I would ever go back.

"I have seen it down through the years when lads retired and then they came back in a few months. You make a decision and stick by it.

"You never know… but no, I wouldn't. I wouldn't. I will concentrate fully now on the 'Bridge."

Coulter also lamented the fact that Marty Clarke and Dan Gordon won't be involved with Down either next year.

"We need our best players in Down playing for Down. Sometimes they are not there," he added.

"Marty is out. Dan is out. We need those two boys playing for Down. Dan couldn't train pre-Christmas either. Obviously Marty has his own reasons and he has made his decision and that's it."
