Ballymartin GAC Club Notes

August 25, 2014

Congratulation to the Loughinisland girls who lifted the title in the Junior Championship Final, Saul 1-08 vs. 2-07 Loughinisland.
* Congratulation to the Ballymartin Ladies on winning the Down Ladies IFC Final. In the dying minutes from the final whistle the Ladies pulled away from a defeat to win by two points after putting one in the back of the Burren nets. Ballymartin 3-07 vs. 1-11 Burren. A job well done after a year of good solid hard work and determination. Thanks to Connor Annett for putting the Ladies thru their paces all year! And it goes to show that hard work and determination pays off! Thanks to the Ballymartin Inn for hosting a celebration night after the win on Saturday. Commiserations to the losing side Burren, you had the 'Whites' on the run most of the game and a good game it was. Ballymartin will play the Donegal Champions at home on Sept 13th in Ulster, looks like we are in preliminary round. If Ballymartin win we will go on to play the Fermanagh Champions on Oct 5th away in Quarter Final.
* The Senior men had an uphill battle in their Round 3 IFC match against An Riocht on Saturday evening, one that they could not pull the reigns back on. They play in the O'Neills Down ACFL Div 2 this Friday at home against Clann na Banna with a 7PM throw-in.
* The South Down RFL Round 9 sees Ballymartin hosting Mayobridge @ 2PM this Sunday 31 August with a 2PM throw-in. Referee: Darren O Hare.
* Great effort from the Minors. The young lads have given everything they have all year and this match against a much fancied An Riocht team was no different. The lads gave 100% and had the hosts on the ropes in the first half only to concede an unfortunate goal late on to go in all square. In a blistering 15 minute period the An Riocht team scored 2 more goals and three points to pull way. The Whites came back well towards the end and finished up with four points but the damage had been done. This ends their interest in the Minor Championship but they can be proud of their effort in the last two weeks against two strong teams and all the best to An Riocht in the rest of the Championship.
* U-16 lads play Atticall tomorrow night in the Longstone as part of the "Down GAA U-16 Football 'E' Plate", Semi Final. Throw-in is at 6:45PM with Peter Brannigan refereeing.
* The U-14's bowed out of the championship last week following a quarter final defeat to a strong An Riocht side. Special thanks to the parents of Ryan Higgins and Keelin Kearney who brought their children home from their holidays in Donegal for the game. There are no more competitive games for the U-14's this season, but the group will be getting together in a couple of weeks to conclude the season and to prepare those still U-13 for a forthcoming short autumn league.
* The Baileghlas U-12s travelled to Bosco on Sunday morning to face a Bosco side who had won the previous meeting between the two. after a tough 1st half it looked as if Bosco were once again going to take the points as they were leading 5 points at half time. this was not to be the case, though, as the Baileghlas lads upped their game in the 2nd half and were worthy winners of the game by 1 point. The 2nd half of this game is how football should be played, with brilliant passing of the ball, good movement, excellent teamwork and discipline. Brian in goals was once again outstanding making some terrific saves, the backline of Ryan, Ronan, Sean and Darragh were strong and disciplined in defence, midfielders Eoin, Cormac McComb and Oran battled hard and won the majority of the breaking balls to supply the forward line of Martin, Steven, Connaire and Cormac Green who used the ball well and took their scores convincingly. This was a good team effort and deserving of the win. Well done boys! Training continues on Thursday night at quarter road pitch from 6pm until 7.30pm. It is important that all players attend training this week as we have a tournament in St Johns on Saturday and the final league game on Sunday at home to An Roicht. Times for both will be confirmed at training. The Baileghlas U-12 team and mentors wish Rory all the best in his studies in Carlisle and thank him for all his help this year. His input and enthusiasm in both training and matches was invaluable to the team and he will be missed. The South Down U-12 Football League Division 2B has Baileghlas hosting An Riocht @ 11AM on Sunday 31 August in Glasdrumman. Referee: Daithi Young.
* The U-10s had a great day at the Atticall tournament on Saturday. Starting off against a strong Shamrocks 'A' outfit they were narrowly beaten. This was followed by a convincing win against Atticall 'B' side taking them on to the Quarter Finals of the shield. With their best display of the day they had a great win over a strong Aghaderg squad. This brought them to the Semi Finals where they were narrowly beaten by Drumintee. This group of players showed fantastic skill and determination on the day namely: Daniel, Eve, Amy, Thomas, Aidan, Orla, Nadine, Nathan, Eoin and Cara. We would like to thank Atticall for the invite and for hosting such a great tournament.
* The U-16 Ladies had a good win over Bosco on Sunday, Ballymartin 3-09 V 1-04 St John Bosco.
* The U-14 B League sees the Ballymartin girls travel to Burren tonight for a 7PM throw-in.
