Shane O'Neills club notes

August 25, 2014

Senior Men
Our senior men were in championship qualifier against on Sunday against Killeavy  and they put in a brilliant display to claim a well deserved five point win over their South Armagh neighbours, 2 - 16 to 2 - 11.
The Shanes opened the scoring early in the game when Connaire Mackin powered in a great shot which the Killeavy keeper did well to push over the bar. A pointed free brought Killeavy level before they registered their first goal which was soon followed by another point to put them four up. A third Killeavy point was sandwiched in between two Paul O'Rourke frees to keep them three points in front but within a matter of two minutes their advantage increased to seven with a further goal and point. The sides then swapped two points apiece with O'Rourke scoring his fourth and fifth points, both from frees, to keep seven between them but the Shanes finished the half the much stronger side and they fired over a further three points in a row with Paul O'Rourke, Mark McCabe and Connaire Mackin all on target to trail by four at the break, 2 - 6 to 0 - 8.
Killeavy got the first point of the second period to lead by five but that man O'Rourke replied immediately for the Shanes before young Mark McCabe was on hand to fist the ball to the Killeavy net with his second goal in as many games to get his side back within one. Another O'Rourke free minutes later tied the game and the same man was on target soon after to put his side one to the good with Killeavy equalising minutes later. A long range point from Oliver Gaughran who, along with Ryan Byrne, was winning a lot of dirty ball around the middle of the field put the Shanes one ahead again before O'Rourke increased the Camlough side's advantage to two with another great point. A pointed Killeavy free left just the minimum between the sides again but Connaire Mackin kept the score-board ticking over for the Shanes with a superb pointed free from right out on the side-line and this quickly followed by well taken point from Oliver Gaughran. The Shanes led by three at this stage but Killeavy reduced the deficit to just two with their tenth point of the game before second-half substitute Neil Paul Lennon fired over a '45 to put a goal between them again. Another long ball into the Killeavy square caused havoc in their defence and Oliver Gaughran was eventually on hand to fist to the ball to net to give his side a six point advantage. Killeavy threw everything at the Shanes in closing minutes but the Shanes defensive unit were outstanding and they only conceded a further point and they held on to claim a great win, 2 - 16 to 2 - 11

Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies hosted table toppers Sarsfields on Wednesday night in a closely contested game. In what proved to be a tight first half both sides had spells on top with Shanes holding a two point lead at half time. Throughout the second-half the lead changed hands several times and with five minutes left on the clock the Shanes held a four point lead. However in the closing stages Sarsfields found the reserves to get in front and win by four. The result leaves Sarsfields on top with Shanes in second place. Well done to all players on both teams for providing an exciting and sporting match. Wednesday night sees the girls back in league action with a re-fixed game away to Mullabrack.

U14 Girls
Well done to the U14 girls gave an excellent performance on Thursday night against St Pats, Cullyhanna to record a comprehensive victory, with Orlaith McArdle top scoring. This result gives the girls a great boost ahead of next week's championship final against their our old foe, Clann Eireann and means that with just two league matches remaining, which if they win both, could result in a league play-off against Clann Eireann also. The championship final is scheduled for Thursday evening, 28th August but location and throw-in time are unknown at this stage. All parents and friends are asked to attend the game to cheer on the girls. Training continues on Tuesday night at 6.00pm at the field.
