Kilcoo GAC Notes

August 18, 2014
On Tuesday evening our minors took on Rostrevor in the championship. This was undoubtedly one of the best games I had the pleasure of attending in recent times with both teams giving it a "good lash". Both teams took the lead at different times throughout the game and it was Kilcoo that held on to win in the end. This win leaves them top of their group, well done lads.
The under 16 boys travelled to Kilclief on Thursday evening and where defeated by a much stronger team.
On Sunday afternoon the Thirds team played Bryansford in the Reserve Championship Final but unfortunately they could not emulate the heights of last season and so ended the defence of their championship title at the semi-final stage.
On Sunday night the seniors travelled to Pairc Esler for their championship group game against Rostrevor. Conor Laverty and Jerome Johnston got Kilcoo's first two scores but by the 10th minute the Rostrevor lads had pulled it back level. Unfortunately for the South Down lads that was as good as it was going to get. Almost immediately a raid up the field for Kilcoo resulted in Gary McEvoy being fouled and the resultant free kick was quickly hit to Johnston who was advancing at speed through the Rostrevor defence. He unleashed an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. 5 minutes later and Johnston pounced on a ball that was broken in the Rostrevor square. This time he went low and gave the keeper no chance, indeed he might very well have reached the hat trick but for some courageous goal keeping from the Rostrevor net minder later in the game. Another point from Johnston and one from James McClean left Rostrevor reeling, but there was no let up in sight. Paul Devlin who had been doing a lot of spade work out the field slotted over 2 points in 3 inutes and Ryan Johnston who had been racing up the field all evening received an inch perfect pass from his brother leaving him with a tap over for the last score of the half.
On the restart Rostrevor got the first score but by now the damage was done. O'Hanlon replied with 2 points from outfield frees. Rostrevor rallied with 3 unanswered points before another long run from Ryan Johnston left him with another tap over. Rostrevor finished off their scoring with two more points and Paul Devlin closed the Magpie's scoring.
On Thursday Kilcoo play Tullylish in the final game of the group stages.
Last Thursday following our application to Ulster Council Kilcoo was awarded their Club Maith Award as a Platinum level club. Well done to the entire club. There was a great turn out last week in Eoghan Rúa Park for the summer scheme organised and hosted by the County Down Rural Community Network. Numbers for last week's Tote Draw 2, 18, 21 & 22. £10 winners; Geardy McEvoy & Anne McEvoy (Tullyree). Next week's jackpot £5,500
Work has now commenced on both the new play park and the new street lighting and pathways so we ask parents to ensure that their children are kept safe whilst this work is ongoing.
