Aughlisnafin GAC club notes

July 21, 2014
Aughlisnafin seniors lost away to Mitchels at Derryleckagh last Friday evening. With a host of players missing only 15 players were available for selection and this meant a few positional switches. Niall Lennon returning from injury went between the posts with Moe McClean starting at right half forward and both went on to having superb peformances over the hour particularly Lennon with three smart saves and decent kick outs. McClean was a revelation outfield covering a serious amount of ground for the cause clearly enjoying an impromptu cameo role outfield.

After a great start the 'Fin led by two points scored by Breannain McComiskey and a Ciaran Rice free won by McClean. McClean and Paul Flanagan were unlucky to see two decent effort sail the wrong side of the uprights. Mitchels rallied and hit three points in succession to edge ahead. Rice sent an effort wide before making amends to send over his second from a placed ball to level the match. The hosts then added another three points without reply and a superb save by Niall Lennon prevented them doubling their advantage. With Francis Boden down injured and play let to continue Mitchels took advantage of the gap in defence to grab their first major of the game. With the 'Fin momentarily out of sorts the reds were in the ascendancy and added another 1-4 before the half time interval. Another excellent save by Lennon and a smart point from McComiskey before the short whistle blew. Half time Mitchels 2-10 Aughlisnafin 0-4.

At the start of the second half the 'Fin dominated the early proceedings outscoring the host 0-4 to 0-1 with the points for the visitors coming from James Brannigan (2), Rice and Flanagan. But another 1-4 in succession from Mitchels negated the 'Fin's early rally. To their credit the 'Fin kept up their work rate and hit three points in a row from Chris Doran and Rice (2). Mitchels had the last word with a point before time up. A much improved second half with seven scores apiece, 1-6 to 0-7 in favour of the hosts. Sterling displays from Lennon, McClean, Rice, McComiskey, Doran and Fitzsimmons. Final score Mitchels 3-16 Aughlisnafin 0-11. Aughlisnafin : N Lennon, A Lynch, F Boden, P McClean, N Travers, Pat Flanagan, S Willoughby, S Fitzsimmons, J Brannigan (0-2), C Doran (0-1), B McComiskey (0-2), M McClean, C Rice (0-5, 0-3 frees), Paul Flanagan (0-1), R Murphy. Very well done to our members Patsy, Noreen and Kevin McComiskey who recently completed the 115 km Camino de Santiago walk in Spain.
